6 month old, over 9kg, is he ready to move to the Maxi Cosi Tobi?

Hi all,

DS is currently in a cabriofix but is getting too big for it I think. He will be 6 months on Saturday and I'm wondering if it is time to move him up to the next car seat. I have got the Maxi Cosi Tobi for him.

I would appreciate any advice.

Technically, yes, but I really wouldn't just yet. Rear facing is so much safer, especially when their heads are so big in comparison to their bodies. It's safest to keep him in the cabriofix until his head reaches the edge of the seat. It doesn't matter if his legs hang off the end :)

It's safer to keep them rear facing for as long as possible.

I think stage 0 is considered too small when their head is level with the top of the seat.

DS2 (who's big) is 11 mo and still in his cabriofiix, I've tried him in his brother's stage 1 seat and he looks very little and although has perfectly good head control etc it definitely didn't give him as much support.

Am hoping to get another few weeks / month in stage 0 before moving up to forward facing.

NOPE even if he is the right weight i doubt he is actually too big, the upper weight limit is 15kg i think? or if they are so tall that their eyes are level with the top of the back of the seat and i doubt he is that big or he would be a monster baby!

my dd is 23/24lb and long but still in her rearfacing seat, she is 10mths and i have a maxi cosi tobi (is ds4's but he is getting too tall) which she will go into but not until she HAS too.

DS is 12mths, 10.5kg and still in his cabrio. His head is nowhere near the top yet. Until he is actually too long or too heavy he's staying in it, it's so much safer. (Although I'll probably get a RF stage 1 anyway).

I would say no.

Have you removed all padding? Does he wear a coat/thick jumper if so remove that too as not only does it make the harness not fit safely it gives the impression the seat is too small. If he really has fully outgrown his seat I would borrow a larger rearfacing seat if you aren't going to go extended rear facing.

No, you want him rf as long as possible. At 6 months his neck muscles aren't strong enough to protect his neck in any sort of impact.

He doesn't need to move until his eyes are level with the back of the seat, and even my ds who is v v tall didn't need to move until he was 12 months old

No! It's rear facing till 13kg's or the childs head is level with the top of the seat (it's eye level for group 1) Your baby is much, much, MUCH safer being rear-facing. If you haven't already bought your tobi please take a look at extended rear facing seats as they are so much safer than front facing seats www.rearfacing.co.uk Even if you have bought your tobi take a look!!!

If you feel little one is cramped and have taken all cushions and the head hugger out and your not putting baby in seat with big jumpers/coats on then take a look at the Britax first class which again is RF untill 13kg but as it's a full size group 0/1 seat baby will have bags of room. also, bear in mind that once baby is crawling and moving about his weight gain will slow down so you should be able to keep him rear facing untill at least 12 months! My DD loved his First Class si, it rear faced until she hit 13kgs, then we turned it forward facing. It lasted her from birth to 4.5yrs old. My DS was a chunk but he fitted in the First Class until we upgraded to a Two Way Elite. At 25months he is happily rear facing still.

You should read the instructions for your particular carseat, as some say that the baby has outgrown it when the top of their head is level with the top of the carseat (mine said this), and some (apparently) say when their eyes are level with the top of the carseat. These are 2 very different things, so it's worth being careful about it.

I thought as much really, I will keep him in the Cabriofix for as long as possible. Thanks everyone
