Quick question re: car insurance and replacing car seats after an accident?

Our car was written off this morning whilst innocently parked outside our house!

DDs carseat was inside so I guess it probably needs replacing, however since our car has been written off and we will just be getting a cash sum for the value of our car any ideas if they will cover the cost of the car seat, or will we just have to take it out of the final amount they give us?

Anyone had this happen? If they aren't going to cover the carseat cost is it worth arguing with them about it?

Certainly tell them that car seat needs to be replaced and costs £x.
When they offer you a settlement, check it and question it if you don't think it's enough.
I looked at ads for cars of same yr and model as mine and got an extra £600 ish. The cheeky bastards.

A numpty in a 4x4 reversed into it at speed. The damage is not that bad but our car is 13 years old, we bought it for £400... it's never going to cost less to fix than to write off.

Okay, if they don't include the car seat in the offer I'll add it on.

I hope we get a good offer generally. It was really reliable, no faults - which is so valuable in the cheap car end of the market.

My insurers required the receipt for the new one to pay out, that's all.

If they won't pay out, ask the person you speak to write a letter stating that the seat is safe and won't fail in another accident possibly injuring or even killing your daughter. Then ask for their full name and job title.

That should get you a replacement pretty quickly.

They should replace it for you streight away without any problem, my dad was in a bump and had dd's seat in, they asked us what seat it was and sent us a halfords voucher to replace it

They've offered to do the we'll buy a new one and they'll refund the receipt thing so I'm happy with that.

It wont be your insurers who pay - they will reclaim the cost of your car and things like care seats, hire car costs etc from the other party.

Great news LaWeasel. Glad you didn't have to fight to get new ones.

Yes they're claiming off the other guy - it has been a lot easier to deal with than I expected (though I was still on the phone all day!) because the third party owned up to being responsible.

I wish more people were honest like that!

I sent a copy of this letter from RoSPA which explains why the car seat needs replacing. The insurers suddenly became very co-operative.
