Car seats

Talk to me about car seats, please (toddlers over 18kg)

DC3 is 6 months and just under 12kg. He's still in his MaxiCosi Cabrio, but not for very much longer.

The most likely next step is that he'll move into the RF Brio Zento we bought for DC2. My concern is that he'll exceed the 18kg limit long before he's old enough to stop using the 5 point harness (he's much heavier age-for-age than his older brother, who was 18kg before he was 2).

Does the Kiddy system restraint continue to work for children over 18kg, or do those seats too effectively turn into high-back boosters at that stage?

Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do?

Thank you!

Not had quite the same issue, but my DS is very tall and basically outgrew his stage 2 car seat at the age of 2.5, but clearly still needed the 5 point harness. We've recently acquired the Britax 1-2-3 Evolva, which so far seems to be doing the job well and should take him up to age 12...HTH.

The britax two way elite takes children up to 25kg harnessed.

StigoftheBump · 19/04/2011 17:23

Thanks both.

We already have a couple of the Evolvas for the older DCs and I agree that they're great seats, but the harness still only goes up to 18kg.

I've emailed In Car Safety to ask if the Britax would be feasible for us given our car and the other car seats we have to use.

We have spent a small fortune on seats over the years; there is so much more (and such better) choice now than 5 or even 3 years ago.

Thanks for your reply, it's really interesting. I assume it can go rear-facing in the same way as the Britax badged multi-tech?

I contacted Volvo on Friday; they may be able to supply one, but we don't have a Volvo, and they want to know our model number Confused. Could I be cheeky, and ask if you have yours in a Volvo or another type of car?

I'm using the kiddy seat with the table restraint for my five year old still (he's a lightweight) and I expect it would work for you if your ds is bigger than 18kg. Can you email them and ask? It's a brilliant seat and we actually bought another one for ds2 (3 yrs) as it's so much handier than the five point restraints that are attached in the car.

Hello, might be a bit late but I just saw your post. DS is just 2 and has just hit 18kg, so officially we need to remove the front cushion and turn it into a high backed booster but I don't feel comfortable about doing this yet. I think we will have to bite the bullet and get a 2 way elite (and will look into the volvo option); I wish we had done that in the first place as with hindsight it was obvious DS would hit 18kg before he was ready for a high backed booster.
