Was anyone else’s breast biopsy much more painful than expected?

At the hospital returning to the outpatient clinic after tests for Breast Cancer, I asked the three other women who had undergone the same tests as me that day, if their biopsy had been so unpleasantly painful!? They said no! I had nearly passed out!

Mine was extremely painful. They took samples in three places. My breasts were black and blue all over the next day.

Hi, I had a vacuum assisted biopsy (12 samples) on Wednesday and it was ok.
Remember people's pain threshold is different, especially depending where you are in your cycle and how nervous you are.
I also read that caffeine can make breast tissue more sensitive- lots of factors to think about.

I fainted during mine. They were all incredibly kind and used lots of extra pain relief after that so they could finish the job. Apparently dense breast tissue can make it more painful.

The department was very short staffed...we were waiting at least 1.5 hours between ultrasound tests. Although I'm 77 I am extremely strong and not a wimp, in fact I was laying a patio three weeks ago! However, the pain from the biopsy needle shooting into my breast was on another level and completely floored me, like a brick hitting my breast. They were very apologetic and comforting but it's been 3days now and my breast is still extremely sore…

Did they not use local anaesthetic? Or not enough? I had biopsies which left my breast very bruised but they’d injected the area with a local and although I was apprehensive I didn’t feel a thing.
It’s not like a superficial skin scrape or something, it seemed like it would be brutal without anaesthetic!

Well, this is the thing....was I given enough....!? It was brutal and I'm strong, it hit me like a brick!

Mine was very uncomfortable and I felt tender afterwards but not excruciating pain to the point of passing out. I think people respond differently to pain and there is also the added stress of actually having a biopsy

God that’s shocking, I’m not at all surprised it was a painful procedure without sufficient anaesthetic.

I had one biopsy of an axillary lymph node where they used quite a big spring loaded needle and it hurt a lot each time it hit my ribs even though the skin was numb.

The vacuum biopsies didn’t really hurt at all being done but I was very bruised and sore afterwards (I had two separate areas done).

The third time I had core biopsies from my breast and axilla but the radiologist who did it was much more gentle and it hardly hurt at all, during or after.

I think it depends on which part of the breast they are testing. I had to have two in situ on the mammogram machine, the second one a repeat where I was already bruised. I think I would cry if I had to go through that again. In contrast a more recent one on the other side was guided by scan and was so much more comfortable.

I've had two today one one each side. It was ok at the time but now it's very painful. I'm quite worried about how I'm going to sleep as they're both at the bottom edge of each breast. I had one before that was at the top middle and it was far less painful.

I found it quite painful, was a needle that did a big click. She did 3 clicks in quick succession.

Waiting on another appointment for ultrasound and possible biopsy. It’s definitely harder waiting and going in when income what’s ahead of you.

I had dense breasts that are getting more fiberous in menopause (am 50). They’re changing all the time and it’s so hard to know what’s ok and what’s not.
