Stomach cancer worried

Hi All

worried sick , last endoscopy was 2021 - last month feeling sick , feeling like I’m having to swallow twice , air sitting at back of throat and find it hard to burp . Off and on pain right middle quadrant . Endoscopy next Wednesday, want to have it but scared they will find stomach or throat cancer . One tonsil also enlarged slightly .

I have had a chest xray and abdominal ultrasound for pain - no gallbladder had that out a few years back and everything looked ok .

I take PPIs so probably not gastritis or ulcer

worried sick

Oh no! This is a horrible thing to hear. I hope with all my heart that you get better.

Sending lots of love ❤️

Could it be the bacteria Helicobacter pylori ?
My relative had it a few years ago and it made her very unwell, loss of weight, could not eat, pain etc. Anti b sorted it out.

I was tested for that 5 years ago , could be I think they will test for that . I am just so worried I think google doesn’t help !

I had H Pylori twice! I also had endoscopy and a gastric bleed from prescribed low dose aspirin, which was fixed with a patch. I had discomfort like yours. All sorted with a longer AB regimen for HP second time around.

What makes you think it's the C thing? Did you have bloods done with markers, and did doc scheduling endoscopy give any hints as to what they would be looking for?

If it helps, OP, I’m a GP and I refer lots of people for OGD (upper endoscopy) every year. I genuinely can’t remember the last time one of my patients was found to have stomach cancer. It’s a rare disease, and there are many far more likely causes for your symptoms, most of which can be treated successfully.

EndlessSeaViews · 14/08/2026 21:07

I had all of those symptoms and made myself sick with worry, spend hours on YouTube watching videos of people with stomach cancer. Had my gastroscope in January this year and nothing found at all.

I also have a long history with IBS so started on a very low dose of Nortriptyline a few months ago and my upper gut issues have greatly improved.

I hope everything goes well for you.

Thank you all .
its not an urgent referral but came through in 4 weeks , the GP seemed to refer me because I was having right side upper quadrant pain and after normal bloods , normal ultrasound and chest xray he said we just need to rule out a peptic ulcer .

To be fair a lot of these symptoms are only in the last few weeks, the air bubble , nausea , swallowing bit harder since that referral. I keep thinking because it’s harder to swallow they might not even get the camera down .

@AppropriateAdult would long term Ppi use not prevent HP ?

my mum died of cancer in April stage 4 diagnosed 10 months before that different cancer to this but I guess it’s just on my radar a lot I appreciate you all replying

No, if you have Helicobacter the PPI can reduce your symptoms a bit, but it won’t clear the underlying infection - you need antibiotics for that - and being on a PPI doesn’t prevent you from getting H pylori in the first place.
