I have been diagnosed with grade 1 Non specific type breast cancer today with dcis in situ. Lymph nodes clear from ultrasound.

I am massively worried. has anyone had any experience of this?

My mum had this a few years ago. She had a lumpectomy operation to remove the lump and then had 2 weeks of radiation. She was advised to take tamoxifen for a few years after but she didn’t want to as the side effects can be similar to menopausal ones. Bit risky of her as it means she has a higher chance of the cancer returning but so far she has had the all clear for 3 years. It’s great they have found the cancer so early on for you as should hopefully be straightforward to deal with and avoid a mastectomy. Best wishes to you

Thank you @Lupin61190 I’m absolutely terrified though. I just keep thinking worst case scenario and that I’m going to die. I know it’s ridiculous. My brain is in overdrive!

They said they’re sure it hasn’t spread but my mind is going all over the place!

My mother had DCIS. She had a mastectomy and that was it all done and over with.

anotherdaytomorrow · 04/12/2025 20:38

My sister was diagnosed 2009, lumpectomy and 6 weeks radiation, yearly mammogram and all has been good for her so far
Wishing you the best OP, look after yourself!

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 04/12/2025 20:42

They said it’s all looking positive, hopefully mri will show I just need lumpectomy then radio, hormone therapy and that’s that. But I can’t help the what ifs. I was totally blindsided today after being told to expect a benign result at my biopsy.

Don't panic. I had this at the end of last year. I had a simple day surgery for the lumpectomy and then 5 days of radiotherapy in March. That's it, all over. No chemo, no ongoing drugs. There is a great ongoing thread for breast cancer in the Health topic which is useful and some wonderful Facebook groups, including one for DCIS. If you are in the UK look for groups based there as treatment is different all over the world. Its frightening at the start but manageable. Please DM me if you need specific help but, most of all, don't panic. This is a blip and you can deal with it then get on with your life.

booknerdhead · 04/12/2025 20:47

Lumpectomy here in 2008, radiotherapy and hormone pills. All straightforward.
Try not to worry (easily said I know).
Makes me appreciate life more and I wish you all the very best.

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago - Liz o Riordan is fab and has written a book called the cancer road map. Can definitely recommend. She was a breast surgeon and has now had cancer three times.

it’s a huge shock at first. But it’s worth knowing that the prognosis these days is so much better and you’re been caught early.

you may get radiotherapy and be offered tamoxifen. But you’ll also be talked through your outcome scores to help you make an informed decision.

I had a lumpectomy but both sides were operated on to make them look equal. Slightly smaller boobs now but the bonus is they’re not as close to my belly button!

the best book Liz pointed me towards was moving through cancer, which is all about the benefits of exercise for cancer and how to go about it with every stage of treatment

the hardest thing about breast cancer is that a lot of the treatments cause meno side effects- exercise and resistance training really does help.

Ikeameatballlunch · 04/12/2025 20:48

The radio therapy is now often just 5 days too, a stronger dose, rather than 15 days

My friend had this. I was literally there when she was diagnosed holding her hand. She was offered the option to have a lumpectomy or a removal of the whole breast, she told them take them both off I’m taking no chances!! 2 weeks later had both breasts removed and a reconstruction and they look amazing! Even got to keep her nipples! (Which I’m so glad about as she was talking about getting different shaped ones tattooed for “a laugh”) She’s been cancer free 5 years now and absolutely thriving! Wishing you all the luck in the world for this battle my love! What’s the treatment options they have given you?xxx

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 04/12/2025 20:53

I’m not worried about side effects I just want it gone. They spoke about mastectomy but hopeful that won’t be needed. I’ve been told I’ll definitely have hormone therapy as it’s ER7 + And likely radiotherapy, hopefully not need chemo.

I wasn’t given an option for what surgery, I was told it’ll be based on what the mri says and the surgeon will decide it won’t be up for discussion!

LoudSnoringDog · 04/12/2025 23:21

I was diagnosed with this on nov11th. I am currently in hospital as I had my lumpectomy earlier today!
I have been told to expect radiotherapy and anti hormone meds in the new year

LoudSnoringDog · 04/12/2025 23:28

@ohdoriswheresthesalad come and join us on the ongoing thread. It’s been such a help for me since my diagnosis

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 04/12/2025 23:41

@LoudSnoringDogim so sorry you are in this situation too! Did your diagnosis change after mri or anything? How are you feeling?

OP posts:
LoudSnoringDog · 05/12/2025 00:41

I’ve not had an MRI. The feedback from the surgeon re today was pretty consistent with what I was told at my biopsy review. Sounds similar to yours, kept being told “it’s very positive it looks like you have caught in good time”

Peridot1 · 05/12/2025 01:50

I was diagnosed with DCIS in 2016. Had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Been fine since.

It is scary. No doubt about it. Your mind goes into overdrive.
