Waiting for results for my Dad’s CT Scan. Extremely Anxious.

Hello everyone. I don’t really know what I’m hoping to achieve from posting here to be honest. I think I just need a hand hold.

My lovely Dad (65) has recently developed quick onset diabetes. The doctors have referred him for a CT Scan on the 2WW guidelines as this can be a symptom of Pancreatic Cancer. He had the CT scan over two weeks ago and has his results face to face on Tuesday.

Im trying to be as positive as possible but I’m worried sick. I can’t eat and I’m constantly teary. I can’t help but think the worst. Is it a promising sign that he hasn’t been contacted immediately after the scan? Also the appointment is in a very small little hospital, usually just for outpatients. Not the usual large local one. Could this also be a good sign?

Thank you for reading 💕

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I've had a lot of investigations and when it's good news or nothing of interest is found I've never been offered a face to face appointment. So I'd say they've definitely found something, and to brace yourself, but the severity or what it is is currently unknown.

Does he have an appointment letter which tells him who the appointment is with and asks him to bring someone with him?, and how has he been managing his diabetes since diagnosis?
With the NHS in the state it is nowadays perhaps I’m being naive to think that had the scan found anything sinister he would have been contacted by phone before now and asked to attend a specialist clinic. I know the poster above thinks otherwise but I think the appointment he has been given is more likely to tell him that his diabetes hasn’t been caused by a malignancy and to let him know how the condition will be managed to prevent complications.
It’s easy for me to say don’t automatically think the worst but fingers crossed that on Tuesday things won’t be as bad as you are thinking they could be.

Who is the follow up appointment with? I think that will tell you a lot. I’ve been on the 2 week pathway more than once. I’ve always been told my scan results in person, even when not cancer. Because follow up care and investigations were still needed so we still had to discuss the next steps.

When I was told about my cancer diagnosis, my appointment was with two cancer specialist nurses in the offices of the consultant handling the biopsy.

As for the quick onset of diabetes, one thing to consider exploring is pancreatic insufficiency. How are his bowels? His digestive system generally? I developed pancreatic insufficiency and it can be related to development especially of type 3 diabetes. It’s something to query if they continue to do investigations.

Hope it goes well for you and your dad.

I wouldn’t overthink it at this stage. It’s one of those situations where you need to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
Ive received CT results in various ways - letter, telephone, face to face.

It might be that it’s cancer, it might be that they’ve found something significant that isn’t cancer, it might just be that there are further tests they want to do. It’s very hard waiting, I know.

Hi Everyone! Thank you so much for all of your comments. My Dad received his results this morning and they are ALL CLEAR for cancer. They have however found a stone in his pancreas and this is probably what has caused his rapid onset of diabetes. The consultant said they are not worried about the stone and it can easily be managed by pills.

Can’t add anything else to previous posts other than to wish your dad well…he obviously has a loving daughter. Best wishes to you both.

I’m so glad to hear this, that must have been such a relief!
