Dad 80 with kidney cancer

Hi all,

Today my dad, who is 80 on Friday, was told he has kidney cancer in his right kidney and that they will remove it using keyhole surgery. They said there’s no evidence on the scan of spread anywhere but I am obviously anxious about him having this procedure at his age. Took them ages to actually tell him this. He had blood in urine in January, went for a ct scan, cystoscopy was clear but he’s only just got results - is this even normal?

Anyway, I’m worried and just wondered if anyone else has had an older relative have this procedure for the same reason? And how did they get on?

Thanks so much for reading x

My DM had this at 73
the kidney and tumour were removed and it was job done

Thanks @rubyslippers That’s what I’m hoping. Do you mind me asking how long it to her to recover and also did they do any tests beforehand other than ct scan ?

Recovery was within weeks and no further treatment
do check if your DF will be having a PET scan

My ex h had kidney cancer coming up to 2 years ago next month. He had a 19cm tumour and his kidney removed, obviously not through key hole. He had a year of immunotherapy following and every scan since has been clear.

Recovery was swift ( given the big surgery ) and he was back in the gym less than 3 months after.

I hope your dad is OK x

Wow @Brunocatmon that’s amazing. And a big tumour! Glad to hear he’s doing well.

@rubyslippers glad to hear recovery was good. I will ask about the pet scan x
