Anyone had a partial nephrectomy?

I'm sue to have one on the 26th of Feb and just hoping to hear stories from others who've had it done?

I have a cancerous 4cm tumour which is being removed. I'm curious to know what I'll be able to do after it as we have a 3 and 4 year old! Eek!

My friend had a complete nephrectomy of one kidney last year. The tumour was 12cm. It had not spread and she had no further treatment. She had a tough couple of weeks physically afterwards but was back to work (WFH) 4 weeks afterwards, 3 days a week. Her wound was quite large and took a bit of healing but within 6 weeks she felt very normal and was walking and swimming.

I hope your op goes well. Good they have caught it small and can do a partial nephrectomy.

@boymama82 how did your op go? I hope it went well and you are finding recovery easy.
I'm sorry I didn't see your message before. I have had a partial nephrectomy of a 7cm tumour grade 3 as it was growing outside the kidney, into the surrounding tissue. I was advised to wait and watch as they thought it was benign but as my father had died of kidney cancer 2 months before, I opted to have the partial nephrectomy. Good job I did as it was cancer. I had had a lot of side pain for a few years and was dismissed by the GP.

I'm supposed to have a 12 monthly check up with CT scan for 5 years, but I can't get a urology appointment until 20 months post op. I'm having quite a lot of pain in my upper abdomen and my core strength is rubbish. I would try to get some physio if they will give it to you.

I don't drink alcohol much but find I feel really rough the next day, even just after 1 G&T. I have had a urine infection and didn't know if I could still take Cymalon, so asked pharmacist and they gave me a three day course of antibiotics. Some research says the 3 day course given to women (men get 3 weeks) is useless and doesn't get rid of it, so it kind of flares up every so often but I cant get a GP appt.

I dont know if you have had an open operation or robotic. Open is a lot harder recovery with a lot of staples. Hopefully you had robotic and are healing well.

Don't be tempted to do too much, its still a major operation and you need to rest and allow yourself time to heal. Accept help when offered and be reasonable about how tired you get and the time needed to recover. Hopefully they have got it all and you won't need any further treatment. Good luck.
