Possible ovarian cancer

I have a dermoid cyst removed & my ovary last Tuesday as there was some torsion. Nothing else was taken. I felt anxious waiting for my letter confirming if my cyst was benign so I called the pre op team who looked over my notes.

she read out loud that I had no normal tissue in my ovary :(

I have no follow up appointment and now have to wait for my pathology report.

to me, that’s means I have cancer.

please can anyone help I am in absolute bits. I am 39 years so not gone through menopause yet :(

Hey op. I think there's a leap that many of us are guilty of that takes us from symptom to cancer. I guess it's a self preservation method of bracing ourselves for the worst. I was absolutely convinced I had cervical cancer and spoke repeatedly to GP (at the point of referral for bleeding) about a hysterectomy. I do understand now that the GP didn't really want to get into that because it was so unlikely. And I didn't have cancer. I just had blinkered vision and that's all I could see.

Did you clarify the "no normal tissue"? It seems far more likely it should have been "no abnormal tissue"??

You are young, making it much less likely and right now you have nothing concrete. Could you call again to clarify. It seems really unhelpful to relay information without explanation.

As someone who wrote this type of report I cannot imagine saying "no normal tissue"

We do say no ABNORMAL tissue

We never give out news of cancer casually over the phone

It's easy to panic over health x

Is there anything on your NHS app for you to read it properly ? 💞💐

thanks for all the messages. I called back and the post op nurse is going to speak to my surgeon in the morning and call me back.

I went into the operation being told this cyst was benign, Infact my operation was elective. I’ve been on the list since may last year.

I was also told that my ovary was full of puss and had to be drained .

i am wondering if “no normal cells” can be pre cancerous. :(

I am just so tired of worrying. If I had no normal cells why didn’t the surgeon take my tube too.

I’m clutching at straws here but as my dermoid was in my cyst could this be what they mean.

Are you confident she didn't say "no abnormal tissue?"

For her to be telling you over the phone, that would be far more likely.

suzanneiom · 10/02/2025 20:08

No she said no normal tissue in my ovary, she never mentioned the dermoid itself , just my ovary.

my ovary was twisted, and she mentioned they drained loads of puss. But didn’t mention infection.

i will know more tomorrow as she is calling me after talking with the surgeon.

Hi @suzanneiom please try to relax. It could be them saying it's not normal tissue due to the presence of other types of tissue than would normally be present there, such as hair, skin cells etc NOT due to the presence of cancerous cells.

Hopefully after your call tomorrow things will be less stressful.

@suzanneiom - what was the outcome of this?

Asking, as I'm going through something similar.
