Cold cap

I’m starting chemo in a few weeks and they’ve offered me the cold cap to reduce hair loss. Has anyone tried it? The statistics sound good. The doctor said it has 50-80% chance success rate which sounds promising. Although I’ve realised after appt I don’t clarify it that’s still 50% of hair lost or 50% of people lose hair if you see the difference.

is it really painful?

I didn’t ….but plenty do….li don’t know anyone who didn’t have some hair loss even with the cap ….,it adds times to the appointment so added time on before and added time on after the infusion…..maybe around a couple of hours? But my appts were around 6 hours so another 2 hours would have been worth it to me if I had wanted to cold cap…..I mean you could lose all your hair even with it…..or maybe just some….you won’t know if you don’t try….and if you try and hate it then you don’t have to carry on…l,I think it’s more of a brain freeze…but only for the first 10 mins or so

I did try it but unfortunately it plunged me into a drop of body temp and I passed out. The man next to me was in shorts snd T-shirt while I was under a blanket with cashmere socks on and just kept getting colder and colder!
After the nurses bought me round I was put in a warming blanket and told no more cold cap.

I used to cold cap all through chemo (6 months) and it worked for me. I lost some of my hair but kept most of it. I was cold, and it's not a nice feeling but it worked for me!

I’m currently using it and have kept about 75% of my hair, it’s thinned out across the crown rather than being patchy. It’s have my final chemo next week so I’d say it’s been a success and I’m really glad i used it. Having said that, it is a grind. The first 10 mins are the worst until your head goes numb. If you can get through that (which you can I’m sure!) you’ll be ok. I take 2 paracetamol 30 mins before my appointment and that helps.

Take a blanket, warm socks and a cardigan as you will get cold and have some warm drinks. And a woolly hat for immediately afterwards.

I 100% recommend trying it. Best of luck xx
