My friend is 40 and was trying for a baby for a while , finally pregnant in the first trimester and just found out she has breast cancer , it’s early stages , she is being booked for a mastectomy but different doctors are telling her different things and I think her mind is spinning , as it would for anyone .
The oncologist she saw told her she can carry on the pregnancy , then she got a second opinion and they told her to terminate as she will need mri’s and test that are nit done on pregnancy .
As anyone bem in this position ? She has an appointment next week with the oncologist and obstetrician so will know more . Thank you and if anyone has any advice on how I can support her please feel free to throw it at me .

Contact Mummy’s star. They are a charity for this area.

It depends how early the tumour is, grade and stage and what is promoting its growth. I don't know if you are in UK, but MRI's are not usually done till further on for early breast cancer here. I've not had mention of one, and they are low risk in 2nd and 3rd trimester, so she could have one then if needed. If she needs chemo, that would have to wait and radiotherapy is a consideration, however, that might be why the mastectomy in preference to lumpectomy so that can be avoided. A lot of treatment hinges on lymph nodes and speed of proliferation. If low grade and low stage, the risks drop. She will have a more complete picture after surgery, if she can wait that long. It's a tricky balance. Her personal feelings come into it, which a Dr cannot account for. MH is also important.
