Tricky question - travel insurance when a parent has cancer

I don't know if anyone can help - I don't have cancer, my dad does, stage 4. Not looking great but not talking time left yet. This isn't directly about him, but his health does affect it. Apologies if it seems like an insensitive question.

Basically, I'd like to book a holiday for me, DH and kids this summer but I'm scared something will happen to my dad in the run-up or when we're away. From what I understand travel insurance covers the unexpected death of a parent, but not when they have a diagnosed serious illness. When I try to Google, it assumes I'm the one with cancer.

I'd be happy to stay home and not go anywhere but I think the kids would love to go away and my dad would rather we did too. But I wanted to make sure we'd be covered for all eventualities :(

You’d have to check the specifics of your policy - you’re right in that it’s usually only for the “unexpected”, but define “unexpected” when you’ve no timeline. However many will refer to pre-existing medical conditions not being covered - which probably applies here unfortunately.

gocompare’s website goes into it a bit more.

would it maybe be worth looking at a fully-refundable holiday, or one where you can change the dates or names - then you’ve got options if needed.

hope you get your holiday & dad’s health is as good as it can be.
