Life expectancy stage 4 bowel cancer

Found out today my dad has stage 4 bowel and lung cancer. He was operated on during Covid and has a colostomy bag. At the moment he can’t sit, trouble sleeping and has difficulty eating. I live four hours away. As the title suggests what sort of life expectancy should I be preparing for? My mil was diagnosed with cancer and she survived 18 months after diagnosis. My mum is also disabled and my dad is her full time carer. My mind is jumping from one thing to another. I’m not surprised as he was bad over Xmas but it’s still a shock to hear it.

I’m sorry for what must have been an awful shock. There’s no way we can tell you here. It depends on many, many factors. Some people are still going strong after 10+ years.

Hi, is it stage 4 bowel cancer with mets to lungs or 2 different cancers? There are statistics out there but we are all unique. I know someone at the moment who is still going strong with stage 4 bowel cancer 3 years on, some live for many many years, but unfortunately there are those who don’t

alot of patients with stage 4 are not eligible for surgery, it sounds like your dad has had an operation? Is there a plan for chemo now or has he had any radio/chemo prior to op?
