Is this a bad idea?

Have three daughters between 5 and 4mths and planning to go camping the week after next.
BUT 4mth old isn't sleeping well, and is often up a few times a night.
AND two older ones are scratty with each other, esp when tired.

Last year we camped twice when I had morning sickness and the girls were hard work so for a long time the thought of camping again did not appeal to me in the slightest !

I was hoping to redeem the experience by going again this summer, but am nervous that actually it'll be a nightmare and I'll never EVER want to do it again !!

We are only going about 30mins from home, so if needs be I can sleep with the baby overnight at home.

Will the enormous hassle and effort be worth it for the change of scene and adventure (note I don't say 'rest' !). This is our only break away this holidays....

How long are you intending camping for? I agree a good idea if you are local and you can go home.

Why not let the dh stay the first night with the 2 girls, you go to camp and join in but go home to sleep, then try the second night all of you once the dd's are more into the under canvas routine, and will be more knackered after the fresh air.

Good idea RedArse. Had planned to go 3/4 nights - partly because of threads on MN that say it gets more relaxed the longer you go, because the kids get into the routine of when it all happens.

We've got a lovely new tent, so that's partly why I really want to go !

Yes, you go and enjoy. I used to go home with the baby on the first night and my others were 3 and 5 at the time. Plus the added bonus that you get a good nights sleep at home and bath etc, and the dh can suffer the first night under canvas with the girls!
