Cooking in the rain - what do you do?

We are camping at the moment and it has rained all day. Our tent doesn't have an awning and I'm worried about cooking inside the tent. What do you do? Any tips gratefully received - though if it carries on pouring down we will be off home and it won't matter!

Thanks in advance of all your advice!!

At some point we cooked using a big black bin bag to cover the fire (suported on out heads!). It was stupid, uneffective, we were smoked beyond belief but hilarious and just for that it was worth it

We've seen this in action on a site in the Cotswolds and it looks fab. Not bad at £20. It wasn't on a Coleman tent either so I reckon it's pretty universal. I will confess to boiling a kettle inside the tent (very close to the door) but it scared me witless TBH so I never did it again.

Do you have a camp kitchen or a stand whereby you could lash a brolly onto it somehow? I've seen umbrellas strapped onto camping chairs. It's a bugger as well when you're wet - cold food just doesn't somehow cut the mustard does it?

Is there anything you could use as a tarp and somehow strap it between the roof of the car possibly and the tent to provide you a bit of a shelter?

Or possibly this?

BigTillyMint · 30/05/2010 22:30

Jet, how does it join on to the tent? The picture isn't very clear!

Hi BTM - is this pic any better? The back of it sort of stretches over the top of the tent (probably touching) and then is secured with guys behind the tent if that makes sense. It looked really good.

Thanks Jet!

Sorry to post and run everyone. We eventually bailed out of a bad trip and it's been difficult to get back to the computer. Thanks for all the awesome links. I'll be looking into them all!

We've invested in the coleman awning from Argos. We'll be trying it out at the weekend & then I'll report back

I use a utility tent.... or toilet tent.... and turn it into a kitchen. Can't let the kids near gas.
