they are boxes you put on top of your car wot you shove stuff in.

chopstheduck · 28/04/2010 17:00

we bought a mont blanc. It did the job, though the handles broke and so it wouldn't stay in the open position. We contacted MB who sent replacements and it seems ok now.

No point in going for a really enourmous one because you can't put anything too heavy in them.

EricPicklesFatNeck · 28/04/2010 17:05

we have this one. looking to sell if you are in scotland! it is pretty good.

bramblebooks · 28/04/2010 19:23

Not in scotland but thanks eric.
Interesting about not getting huge one!

We got one a few weeks ago- a Thules one from a company called saveanddrive.co.uk. I also bought the roof bars from them. Really good service from Dave who even called on Easter Monday to discuss what we were after.

He told me that they originally started hiring the boxes out, thinking that they would renew them every year and the original boxes are still on the go- 10 years later!

bramble my dear there is only one thing you need to know

GET THE BIGGEST ONE THAT WILL FIT ON YOUR CAR

Think BIG. Think elk coffin size. There is never enough room whatever size you get.

We got ours from Halfords. It is grey and big.

Slubberdegullion · 29/04/2010 16:00

but but but you can shove all manner of light things in there. Chairs, sleeping bags, mats, rugs, bucket with a lid, small persons chairs and table, clothes, pegs. Just shove it all in, shove shove shove.

We have yet to topple over in a high wind.

bramblebooks · 29/04/2010 17:40

Ah the oracle!

agree with slubber - in this case big is beautiful!

We shove as much as possible in roof box, then stuff every crevice in the car and stick a bike rack on the back (poor car!)

Slubberdegullion · 29/04/2010 19:17

bramble mate you can come round anytime you like to marvel at our roofbox. It's round the side cunningly hidden fron burgulars and theives by the gigantic pile of cardboard boxes and various other plastic shitola wot I have been meaning to take to the tip for 6 months now.

bramblebooks · 30/04/2010 09:06

Phwoar. Rubs thighs in anticipation.

Vague memories of drinking session last night at pub when good friend offered the loan of their roofie - which is kept in the Garage

funny slubber that is exactly where we keep ours!

Lucycat · 30/04/2010 17:51

Yep agree with slubber (as per) get the biggest that will fit on the car.
Ours is suspended in the roof of our garage by levers and pulleys (well a bit of rope wound round some nails) and I can just fit my little car in underneath it.

Slippery slope to the camping trailer though bramble

Slubberdegullion · 01/05/2010 11:20

cor I LOVE the sound of your Heath Robinson pulleys and lever system Lucy. What a great idea.

I dread opening our roofbox. Last year a whole Sim City stylee operation of spiders had set up home inside (how the chuff did they get in?) after a winter of neglect outside the garage.

I'm slightly concerned that the blue diamond windbreak might also be inside...

bramblebooks · 01/05/2010 15:36

Have been looking at *vans on ebay.
realise I know nothing about them and have walked away!

You need to make sure you have a plan for where it will live when it's not on top of your car before you buy it .

Plus, driving back from the south of France in August with a load of olives and garlic in there is maybe not the best idea.

kitbit · 01/05/2010 16:50

We have a biggun too. It's fab. We put all the light stuff in there and put the heavy and big stuff in the boot of the car. Moved house with it from Spain to North of England and it was a life saver. Am also thinking it will come into its own when I have finished filling every small corner of the house with camping stuff......

BigTillyMint · 02/05/2010 13:59

We have a half-width one so that we can get a bike ontop too. It has stayed on the car all year despite only being used in the summer for camping

We load it up with lots of heavy stuff (like loads of crates of wine on the way back) and it is only a cheapo Halfords one.
