Pop-up tents - are they really useless?

I want to get a tent for DD to sleep in in the garden over the summer holidays - so nothing fancy, we won't be taking it on proper camping trips or anything. I would love to get one of those pop-up tents but my instinct tells me they are rubbish - would they be ok for just the odd night in the garden do you think?

I bought a cheap pop-up in France a couple of years ago, for dd to have "sleep-overs" with new found holiday friends. I now use it as a pup tent and the three of us (me,dd & ds)squash in for the last night of the holiday. I think it's great....once I'd mastered the art of putting it away. It pays to watch a video on-line.

Batteryhuman · 16/02/2010 16:07

Same as Brightwell said down to the buying in france and using as a pup tent. Fine for a festival too.

Lucycat · 16/02/2010 16:50

Ditto - there is a photo of our 2 on my profile.

Decathlon do some lovely designs too

Bodenbabe · 16/02/2010 17:53

I was wondering why people bought tents for their dogs but then I Googled 'pup tent' I'm so pleased to hear they're do-able, I couldn't face the thought of struggling with poles! Brill, thanks people!

They are ace. We have two of the Outwell ones for weekend camping. Despite my dislike of plastic tents they are hilariously easy to pitch and strike and are perfect for back garden camps Bodenbabe.

TALKING OF WHICH

who has seen the new outwell video with its new pop up tents?

A new saga in the Outwell family, the new vital accessory this year (last year was the linen suit) is.....

Slubberdegullion · 16/02/2010 17:58

ONLY A SODDING CANOE

Oh I love those jokers down at Outwell. God bless them and their inspirational videos.

Slubberdegullion · 16/02/2010 18:01

I also note that this year I must be bare foot in a white floaty dress, and possibly no bra.

Where the chff did that bbq spring from eh?

Lucycat · 16/02/2010 19:24

Firstly I'd need the QE2 to carry my tent -all 60kg of her. and if you let go of those pop up tents they catch you under the chin in a mean upper cut, knocking you out.

the BBQ clearly came in the boot of a sensible camper.

Do you not usually wear a white linen dress when camping in Wales slubber? tis de rigeur en France

Lucycat · 16/02/2010 19:26

Just noticed that they don't make my tent anymore! it's a collector's item then?

Slubberdegullion · 16/02/2010 19:33

ooooh have the discontinued the Norfolk? I wonder why. I think Cabanon is on its death rattles now by all accounts.

re white dress in Wales, oh yes of course, over the top of the 3 vests and underneath the fleece and raincoat .

lol at bbq in the car.

My fave outwell ad is still the pineapple in the matching fruitbowl though.

Slubberdegullion · 16/02/2010 19:36

am roffling at the image of mr Lucycat lowering the Norfolk into a canoe and it breaking in half and sinking a la the titanic.

Lucycat · 16/02/2010 19:37

well I can't see Lakey on their website.

I love the pineapple thing too.

D'you think the tablemat has the Outwell logo? - if it does I need one for this season. If not then the salt n pepper grinders are a must.

Slubberdegullion · 16/02/2010 19:37

With the misses Lucycat stood folornly on the bank clutching their matching rucksacks and backpacks

[joke]

Lucycat · 16/02/2010 19:37

Gawd I hope we don't see any icebergs in the Dordogne.

Lucycat · 16/02/2010 19:39

No we'd have all our belongings in their folding baskets - with Outwell logos displayed prominently.

Our linen dresses would get wet too.

Slubberdegullion · 16/02/2010 19:39

ooer self inflating mats also matchy matchy

Lucycat · 16/02/2010 19:41

specialmagiclady · 17/02/2010 11:59

I have one of those BBQs it folds flat as a Shrove Tuesday culinary tradition.

hocuspontas · 17/02/2010 12:07

Love the canoe video. In fact I'm going to watch it again

Love those self-inflating mats. There's no price - are they serious money?
