how cold do you go....

So we have been camping twice with the boys (4+2) now the last 2 weekends - novice tent-owning enthusiasm... They are very keen to go again, but it will be October before we can go now...suspect this is madness...
We have an Orchy and 3 season bags. Last weekend ds2 wore: a vest, pyjamas, fleece suit, thick gro-bag, woolly hat...then was popped in the top of a full size sleeping bag. He was comfy and slept well. Dh and I went to bed by 10ish, mainly because it was too chilly to sit around drinking wine anymore...
So when is it so cold it isn't fun? I don't think I can wrap ds2 up in many more clothes...

We've got a thermometer in our caravan, which is practically like camping - it is so poorly insulated. When it drops below about 10 degrees centigrade isn't great, but still can cope with plenty of blankets and a hot water bottle, but maybe we are soft southerners

It was 8 degrees this weekend and we camped out in the garden. Very cold at about 2am but lovely and warm under the duvet.

You can get tent heaters which help, although we didn't use one this weekend.

pre - dd when dh and i had our love to keep us warm, we did sub zero!

now not so much

atm we are each sleeping next to one of the ds to pop them back into their bags if they wriggle out.
so no love keeping us warm in our tent!

Last year we pitched our tent at a campsite, snuggled down and woke up to an eerie silence- it had snowed in the night and our tent suddenly resembled an igloo. The car thermometer said -2. We were lovely and warm though.

When DD had just turned one, we camped when there was snow still on the ground. Trying to get the pegs in was very hard! It dropped to -8 that night (not in the UK). Thankfully we had taken our two man tent so we all snuggled together. DD slept in her snowsuit inside a sleeping bag. I wont forget that we all slept for a good 11 hours that night!

now I feel completely wimpy, usernametaken.
We do have a space-in-car issue, though in terms of fitting in any more layers..
The forecast was for 6 degrees on Sat night but I think it clouded over in the small hours and stayed a bit warmer.

The first time we camped it was 6 degrees at night and I was absolutely freezing (mainly due to our airbed going down in the night so we were virtually sleeping on the ground). The next time we went I made sure we had much warmer sleeping bags, pjs, socks and hats and also some of those thin fleece blankets and a duvet! Needless to say, we were plenty warm enough. I'm sure you'll be fine if you make sure you take more than you think you'll need!

one day we we actually get the self-inflating mats we ordered a month ago - sounds like that will make a difference.
I think a roof box would be needed to take a duvet, though
