Has anyone used one of these cheap Asda tents?

Am a novice camper and will not be using tent much. Had pretty much decided on a Gelert pop up 4 man tent. Then miserly dp went and saw these cheap Asda tents: £25 for a 2 man pop up and £20 for a 3 man not exactly pop up. They say they are good for small showers. That, I imagine, means they are likely to leak in a downpour.
Shall I get one or would it be a false economy?

my mum is a keen camper and she got one of these as she was going to be arriving late to the campsite and thought it would be easier, then put the proper tent up next day. She hated it onced popped up she couldnt get it to go back in bag, she struggled in the 2 man one alone it was so tiny.
They are flimsy and only fit as a kids play tent.

Sorry to be so negative

Curiousmama · 05/08/2009 14:55

No don't get them false economy. Unless you can guarantee it won't rain much?

Curiousmama · 05/08/2009 14:55

Gelert are good though

Goober · 05/08/2009 19:39

I got the Asda 4 man tunnel tent.
I love it.
It has been out (garden) in all weathers and has not leaked.
Though I don't know how it would bare up under strong winds.
I got a cheapy to see if we interested in camping with a view to upgrading if we liked it.

Curiousmama · 05/08/2009 21:10

So are you hooked then Goober?

Goober · 05/08/2009 21:42

Yes!

I love the smell of tent.

Yeoman Outdoors have the Outwell pop ups on offer at the moment - the Jersey M 3 man is reduced to 44.95 from 109.99 - now that is a proper pop up tent.

We have the Gelert quickdraw pop up for the boys to play in - when it rains the inside fills with water around the edges ...I wouldn't want to sleep in it that is for sure.

Curiousmama · 05/08/2009 22:03

uk campsite is good for reviews.

Outwell are a good make sounds like a bargain Washersaurus. Am suprised at Gelert. A friend's brother's just bought one to take his son camping, hope they'll keep dry.

puffling · 05/08/2009 22:31

Thanks everyone for great feedback. I'll investigate the Outwell.

Actually, Yeomans also have the Outwell Alderney pop up on offer too - tis a 2 man tent but has 2 storage areas. It is £45 (was £115) and in a choice of colours.

lisad123 · 06/08/2009 08:51

what about this one? here

Curiousmama · 06/08/2009 12:46

Oh no that Alderney is too tempting....we already have 5 tents.

Washersaurus · 06/08/2009 20:43

Hmm I would never buy a Halfords tent (it has no SIG and they are quite rubbish from what I have seen.

notsoteenagemum · 06/08/2009 20:58

Just wondering puffling how many of you will be sleeping in the tent?
We have a Gelert eiger 4 man which is ok for dh(6ft4) and I at festivals, but when we slept in it with our dc (9 and 4) at pil caravan it was far too small and we didn't have any stuff in with us it was in the car and caravan.
We have just bought a Vango Venture 500 from Go Outdoors which I hope will be a better option for us.

puffling · 06/08/2009 21:09

Just me and dd, but wd need room if dp who's 6ft 1 were ever to come too.

I'd get something with a bit of storage if I were you then, also a porch is useful if it rains and you don't want to sit in your bedroom.

notsoteenagemum · 06/08/2009 21:24

I think millets have a eurohike 3 man with a porch area on offer for £29.99.

Curiousmama · 08/08/2009 11:58

The zenobia has storage and is tall enough for your dp to stand up in I think? They have them up in Go outdoors. They're 144 though so more of an investment.

bubblerock · 26/08/2009 23:38

We bought the Jersey for £29 from Yeomans and it's brilliant - pop up tents are fab for 'non campers'
