best quiet, small, folky and child friendly festival?

I have this idea that I'd like to go to a festival some day with the dcs - but it needs to be a kind of middle aged quiet affair with interesting acoustic music and fun for the dcs. Any ideas?

Dh and dd,9, just got back from 2000 trees festival here and had a great time but not much organised for dc. Am looking at Larmer tree for next year. It gets good reviews, not sure if the music suits you but good for dc.

elliott · 27/07/2009 21:54

thanks, just been browsing the festival awards site and others....2000 trees and larmer tree both mentioned!
Also needs to be not a million miles from the north of england which probably counts out a lot of the best in the south west...

Cambridge Folk Festival is lovely, has kids' concert, creche and kids' activities, plus walkabout characters in the main site.

But gets booked up extremely quickly and it's this coming weekend - so maybe one to keep in mind for another year?

CountessDracula · 28/07/2009 23:17

What's Cropredy like for children?

elliott · 28/07/2009 23:27

Oh this is for next year - I never do last minute Cambridge folk is probably worth thinking about, there's also cropredy (sp?) which might be what I'm after.

towersey folk festival? bank holiday weekend nr reading somewhere. it has ceilidhs, workshops, acoustic music. and morris dancers, though not sure if that is a selling point...

bronze · 28/07/2009 23:29

Copredys full of aging hippies sitting around drinking quietly and being very friendly. (not been to the festival as such but been in town, on the canal, when its been on)

I really want to go to Cambridge but the only person who will go with me is my Dad and I have to wait for him to moe back

raggedtrouseredphilanthropist · 28/07/2009 23:29

oops, just saw you are north west

mummypig · 28/07/2009 23:35

bronze I really want to go too but dp is not keen (on camping or folk) and my dad lives too far away as well. D'you think we could manage 7 kids between us ?

elliott · 28/07/2009 23:59

how sad am I, cropredy sounds great...! (I particularly like the 'quietly drinking beer' idea...
I am north east not north west. Don't mind a bit of a drive if its school hols so can stretch the weekend...

"how sad am I, cropredy sounds great"

I thought so too - glad you said it first.

paisleyleaf · 29/07/2009 00:08

Just looked at the line-up
surprised to see Buzzcocks ........and Nik Kershaw

bronze · 29/07/2009 10:42

the quieter festivals sound nicer to me too

I could perhaps offload my eldest two (my dps not folk/tent friendly either) but next year that would still leave me a toddler ahhh and a madam (hopefully she'll have grown up a bit)

Cropredy at the fairport convention convention too. Don't really know the fairport convention but the people seemed lovely then too

mightyevs · 29/07/2009 14:52

We went to Larmer Tree this year and it is fantastic for kids. Loads of crafty workshops, largely centred on making decorations for the big carnival procession on the last day. The music varies but is mainly folky, and there are woods, healing tents for Reiki etc, the food is lovely, camping is very close to the car parks, award-winning toilets, beautiful surroundings, loads of people there with young kids, and a wide range of ages overall. It's one of the bigger "small" festivals, with around 4,000 - 5,000 people there, but it never feels crowded, never feels vast, and it always feels safe. We could walk from our tent to the main stage in under 5 minutes (unless we got distracted by someone busking or a food stall or some lovely clothes). There's enough to keep you busy for about a fortnight, let alone a weekend.
For all the music and everything that is laid on, my favourite memories are of walking through the woods and hearing the sound of people singing in one of the workshops. Just beautiful. Thoroughly recommended, even in the mud!

I am going to Bromyard this year with DD (age 6) and my parents (age 60+, ageing hippies). It looks v nice and child friendly - has daytime dancing etc.
Last year we went to one in CUmbria (name escapes me) - this year's has just been on a few weeks ago - v similar, v child friendly, full of old hippies, v wet, v muddy. There were child activities etc.

off to Cambridge folk festival tommorow with DH and the boys (8,6) Cannot wait. I will report back in a couple of a weeks

norksinmywaistband · 29/07/2009 20:54

Our annual holiday was to the cropredy festival when I was a child. Age ranged from 2 to 14 in our party.
Really friendly, quiet considering the number of people, they often put on a bit of child friendly entertainment in the afternoon.
Toilets were alway fine, showers very few and far between( mum used to heat u a large bowl of water so we could have a wash down in the tent each morning - things might have changed a bit now.
I am planning on taking my 2 next year
Maybe I will see you there

mollyroger · 29/07/2009 20:55

god I love croppers

norksinmywaistband · 29/07/2009 20:57

I am now smiling that you are all like minded
