tent pegs! who is up for a thrilling discussion about tent pegs?

our bog standard pegs were not up to the job last weekend (sandy campsite and windy on the last night = big kite). any recommendations please?

I'm sorry I can't help as I only have bog standard metal wire type pegs and they have always worked ok. But I have heard snatches of MN conversation about "delta pegs" - don't know what they are but they sound tech to me.

and obviously I couldn't let this camping thread, however mindblowingly dull modest, pass me by

Screwing in your tent pegs with a cordless drill? Pshaw!

First ones look OK but how would you get them out? (i like the little note - "pegs have no holes as in pic" what?)

yes i liked that, like i would sue if i got the pegs and there was no hole.

i don't care how you get them out as long as they stay in, and i don't have half the campsite tearing round tracking me down to warn me that my awning is about to blow away.

See I saw the hole and thought "ah a cunning hole to help you pull them out" (eg by hooking a normal tent peg into them). So no holes is a bit annoying. I hate not being able to get me pegs out (as we're always bang up against kicking-out time of course, have delayed too long over the lovingly cooked breakfast and espresso)

yes and gathering up the bunting and tea light chandelier must take up so much time.

Apparantly Delta Pegs are the way to go. I am a member of www.ukcampsite.co.uk and there are lots of posts about them.

I bought a load of delta pegs - they look good, but we haven't had any bad wind yet!

Anyway chevre where did you go that was sandy and windy?

big sands, gairloch, we had gorgeous weather teh whole time until the last night. the guy ropes just keep popping up. i may be investing in some deltas!

Oh - would love to go there sometime! Not good with long drives but it's on my list.

worth the drive! we stopped near aviemore on teh way up and stayed on a lovely forestry commission site.

wouldn't touch delta pegs, have seen some poor sod trying to get his out and he nearly had to leave the whole flippin tent

We use similar to these things - have used them on hardstanding awning pitches and also with the tent when pitching on rock hard ground. They do the job nicely and are less of a PITA to get out of the ground

We've built up a collection over the years, from rock pegs to the more robust version of hook pegs.

Just invested in some Delta pegs for our large tunnel tent and they're fantastic. Haven't had a problem getting them out, we used a large pair of pliers that we take camping to remove pegs anyway. Y

Deltas are not suitable for sandy conditions, even the marvellous Rob Orr the delta inventor says so. He is currently inventing a sandy delta so I believe.

I think on ukcs they recommend those hugely long and girthly wooden pegs if you camp on the sand.

For all other conditions deltas are the way to go, and they are so easy to get out. I have never had any problems. You have to follow the 'extraction' instructions though

ahh chevre, but then you would not have a bag of assorted (and yet grouped together in little boxes) bag. You need a bag. Utilitarians always have an assortment bag.

I have read far too many delta peg kick offs on ukcs now (oh yes it is the bf vs ff hot topic over there, people get quite frothy) and I'm pretty sure that the design of the delta doesn't perform well in sand. It's all to do with angles.

I could tell you about angles but I'm ploughing through MJ articles on Vanity Fair, I need the loo and I have to go to sainsbury's.

what about those corkscrew type ones i've seen about. I wonder if they are good on sandy soils

I have seen the corkscrew ones in the ads in my C&CC mag. They look fancy, but do you not need a corkscrew type inserter? I already have 2 standard mallets and 1 forge steel wooden mallet I really, really do not need anymore peg adjunct clart.

I have yet to camp in sandy soil so I do not have sandy soil pegs. If I were to sandy soil camp I think I would go for the big wooden jobbies. I like the cut of their jib.

Oh I missed a peg thread, I have been washing the car making it all shiney for camping.

Very important to have a shiney car to drive into a muddy field.

We have original tent pegs.
Spare pegs similar to original pegs, but bigger.
Outwell plastic pegs (crap).
Groundhog pegs (for harder ground, bought 'em cause I liked the name).
Rock pegs (for really hard ground, still in the packet).
Delta pegs (for wind).

I reckon half the weight of our pole bag is pegs, but I feel very prepared.

Ukcs suggests a claw hammer to remove Deltas, I have duly packed one.

What are all the issues with the deltas? I am not understanding. Pull them out the way you banged them in, at an angle, like so

If they are a bit stubborn at first you just give the flat 'angle' bit at the top a bit of a wiggle....and

Wildy, that is quite some list. I do not have rock pegs

I do have some luminous topped stout pegs that are quite nice AND an array of flat topped ground sheet pegs.
