First camping trip - do we need a loo?

DH thinks we need a portable loo, even if going to site with toilet block. I think I managed without on throughout 18 years camping with my parents and we will manage, too.

DDs will be 4 and 7 by the time we go. 4 yo is toilet trained during day, but in pull-ups at night. 7yo has bladder like camel, but tendencies to imagine she needs the loo if she thinks of it last thing at night!

And we have a small car and have just bought a very lovely, polycotton tent in an extremely big bag . Are going to have a trailer by the time we go, but packing space could still be a bit tight.

DISCLAIMER - I AM IN NO WAY A CAMPER HAVING ONLY BEEN ONCE TO A READYTENT AT HALF TERM.

But, could you not just buy a cheapy basin from Tesco for 99p for any nighttime wees?

Hmm, given the choice between having to empty the portable loo or use the (probably perfectly clean and serviceable) loo block I know which I'd prefer

ramonaquimby · 10/06/2009 17:42

is silly to get a toilet I think! just another gadget.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 10/06/2009 17:43

A loo? No surely not, an emergency bucket maybe, but mostly I imagine you'll be able to make it to the toilet block.

Maybe invest in this a loo shaped bucket

Seriously you don't need one.

What tent have you brought? Linky please.

PortBlacksandResident · 10/06/2009 17:47

Camp-sites are competitive - they tend to have very clean loos.

zanz1bar · 10/06/2009 18:26

Don't need it for camping at a pleasant site, but if you are going to a festival its a must have.

We still have an old potty that we take and I think all of us have used it at one time or another in the middle of the night!

milkybarsrus · 10/06/2009 21:01

we have used a bucket with a lid that you can buy for about a fiver (or less) from a hardware store, much lighter to carry than a porta loo and easier to clean out.

Smithagain · 11/06/2009 13:11

Thanks all! Think we may take our old nappy bucket - with very well fitting lid - for emergency use only.

Am getting very excited now. Have splashed out on a Wolf Lake 5. (We weren't intending to go quite so mad, but visited the tent showroom on a very hot day and were totally bowled over by the much pleasanter environment inside the polycotton tents. So we really have to make a go of this now, or we will regret the serious amount of money that has been spent .)

Booked our first trip last night, to Graffham, nr Petworth. Which is near enough to home that we can leg it back to collect something we've forgotten, if need be.

@ wolf lake 5

Smithagain · 11/06/2009 14:10

We fell in love. With a tent. Didn't know what you guys meant by tent porn till we went shopping .

(Also struck deal with in-laws whereby DH and I we forgo b'day and xmas presents for about a million years, in exchange for a cash contribution towards the eye-watering price )

It is very lovely, though. Put it up in the garden and didn't want to take it down, despite the fact it occupies the entire available space!

Oh. My. God.

Just googled your tent. Am very too.

Hope you have a great camping trip, glad you decided you don't need a loo.

gibba8 · 11/06/2009 20:11

You definetly need a portable loo!
We would not be without ours-late night/early morning trips to campsite loos in the cold and damp are not for me!!

krumble · 11/06/2009 22:09

I need my loo as I simply couldn't make myself decent and get to the loo in time in the morning. By decent I mean put on jammy bottoms and some sort of jumper. Nope, plus my middle of the miht pees do't give me much time either.

would fancy early morning pee dashes with LOs either.

krumble · 11/06/2009 22:11

Wouldn't that is
