Shell Island - camptastic or chavtastic?!

I'm looking for somewhere in North Wales for a week in August (that's if I don't suddenly discover I've got £500 in the bank, in which case I'm booking a cottage!).

We're new to camping and would like somewhere on/near the beach but not too isolated - I need to know there's a shop/food nearby!

Shell Island looks interesting and lots of facilities but also like it could be a nightmare??!

Would love to hear from anyone who's been - thanks

I'm in North Wales. Shell Island a bit away from me so not able to speak with authority, but there is a lovely place just outside of Caernarfon called Riverside camping where I go a lot as it is attached to a lovely garden centre and cafe.Civilised peopel, immaculate grounds (a lovely river flowing through it) and you are ideally placed for Caernarfon, Llanberis, the lleyn and so on.

Here is nice too but further out, so quieter. I pass it every day on my way to work

ooh thanks - I saw this one and thought it looked good. Am really umming and aahing about going for a week - feels a bit odd our 'main' holiday won't be in a cottage but we just can't afford it this year and I don't really want to stay at home - will be checking on work stuff before I know it...

Anyway - thanks for the recommendation - will probably book here unless I hear wondrous things about Shell Island!

moondog that site looks lovely and as I discovered a few years back that we both like delanog as well I know that this site will be well worth a visit

Moondog - how far/how long would it take to drive from the garden centre campsite to Porthmadog? We love that area so would probably want to go for a day trip or two but I'm not sure how long it would take to drive there?

It's lovely.
(Riverside) I know the people and they are charming. Also, the loos and showers are always immaculate on the campsite.I always go as we like messing around by the river and my kids like watching the campers jealously.

Sitting on the terrace of the cafe in the sun, watching the river and the kids playing is really nice and believe me, I am a fussy bugger.

I've not been but know a few people who have and have heard good things about it. One friend takes her own loo as, because it's so big, you might be a trek from the loo block. The beach there is apparently fab.

We are going here at Whit. It has a 'yurt space'.

We'retaking our boys here which I would contest is equally poncetastic (albeit teepee space instead of yurt); proper campfires and fresh mackerel for dinner.... yummy!
