Thanks for all your advice about camping with toddler and wheelchair! We have now got tent, outwell montanna 6, and are gathering bits and pieces together but I want to talk about lights. We grew up using coleman (i think) gas lanterns with the mantles, hot, dangerous if you knock them over but fairly reliable.

DH thinks, and I agree, that a lively not quite 2 year old and a non walking 4 year old make this too dangerous in a tent so we are looking for replacements. We will be camping in a mixture of places with EHU and not so would ideally like something for both, does that exist? I can't seem to find anything. Also LED or not? what't the battery life like on any of these lights? Are the wind up ones any good, how much do you have to wind them? what do you all have?
Thanks!!

bit of a mixture for us..

We have an inspection light (for when we are using ehu) in the tent...hung from the loop in the top of our monty 6.( B&Q 5.99). We just less glaring bulbs in it.
We sometimes use battery lanterns when we aren't doing ehu and have a gas lantern for outside. The kids use the wind up ones or cheapy kids torches.

I have over the last few years collected and discarded a range of torches and lghts and these are now the 3 which MUST come on every trip .

  1. UFO style LED light as sold in poundland fanbloodytastic hung up for overall room light - also loads on ebay if you dont have a poundland near you.
  1. headtorch for reading in sleeping bag without waking DD, going to loo in the night and anytime i might need to use hands
  1. Osram torch which has pull out feet and adjustable head - i got mine from lidls 3 years ago , its very tough and great for targeted light.

oh yes! ..forgot about the ufo light...that's what we use in middle of tent when we haven't bothered with ehu light. It's excellent. Got it from ebay.
And also head torches...yes...very good. Dc's use them a lot

Thanks! I like the sound of th eUFO style one! DH and I have headtorches so that's ok, was going to get the DC a torch each to play with anyway.
I will look into the osram one, can the brightness be adjusted at all?

Just noticed Poundland have their camping gear including lights online to view here - have some dinky lanterns which are same as one my DD had for our first trip - she loved carrying it around and it was agreat light for her bedspace
