Caravan or Campervan?

DH and I are thinking of buying one of the above for a fairly lengthy period of travelling with the DD's either in UK or Europe, not sure yet which. Trips could be fairly long, like a few weeks at a time. We are both novice campers although I have tented a bit. Although I'd love a stylish retro VW type camper I am not actually sure it would be so practical, in reality I think would like something with more space, better kitchen, bathroom etc. I like the idea of a caravan because they are cheaper, also you can set up camp and then leave it behind, and a car is easier to drive around towns/villages than a huge Campervan But also like Campervan/mobile home type thing for the fun aspect and because it means not having to tow, also you have more flexibility about where you can camp (at least you do in Europe). Which do you reckon? Which would be better from a space/living point of view for a family of four?

I don;t know, thought I'd bump for you. Someone once said on here that VW campervans guzzle money. I've stayed in a caravma quite a few times meself and I find them a bit of a pain.

But I'm sure someone knowledgeable will come along

There are a lot of free places to camp in france which you can use with a camper van but not a caravan. Camping charges in campsites will be the same for campervans or caravans.

Are you all active, will you take bikes to use aswell?

It is fairly easy to get around and park a campervan in Spain, france and Portugal - there are in some places barriers but not often.

I have travelled hundreds of miles with small dc in a campervan and have done a caravan and I know which I would choose to travell with children..a capmer van is good for children they can sit and colour, play cards etc much easier than in a car.

easier to just stop and eat at the table etc and pop the kettle on.

Pulling a caravan and driving a camper van, a campervan will take more fuel, but a caravan will also guzzle the fuel in the car pulling.
