Footprints - what size do I need?

I am just about to buy a Vango tent with a SIG. I've been advised to get a footprint. Are they specific to each tent? I'm planning to buy a Vango Kura 600 Tunnel tent, so does that mean I need a specific Vango Kura 600 footprint?

Short answer is yes, or else it won't match the outline of the tent and it won't do the job.
Longer answer is, we have never had a footprint and have camped happily for years without one. IMO, it is just another piece of kit that you have to manage. However, many folks like them and if you want one, buy it soon as tent models go out of manufacture very quickly and likewise, so do the associated footprints.

Thank you, that makes sense.

We just got a big piece of tarpaulin, and kind of stuffed it around to fit. Footprints do seem awfully expensive for what they are.

I thought that as well. We were wondering if we could make do with a large groundsheet. I think I'll wait until I get the tent, put it up and then see.

We just ordered a tarp online. You can specify size .

DisasterEggs · 12/04/2009 19:15

i don't get it. is it to keep the mud off the tent? will you need a footprint for your footprint? when do you stop?

troutpout · 12/04/2009 19:30

lol disaster
Just means you can bung the tent with it's sig in the bag and it's clean. Footprint tarp goes in bin bag and is never cleaned.

anniebear · 13/04/2009 08:39

ok...what is a footprint?!!

johnworf · 13/04/2009 08:54

It's a ground sheet. It goes down before the tent and the tent is set up over it. It is usually shaped the same as the bottom of the tent it is made for. We have a Vango Diablo 600 and the footprint is specific to this make/model of tent.

Vango's have a 'porch' area so if you don't have a footprint, then you're on grass. Not brilliant if it's damp or raining.

Footprints also keep the bottom of your tent clean and dry.

I presumed the op was talking about a groudsheet. You can get footprint groundsheet for tents Annie which exactly match the shape of the tent so keeping the bottom of the tent clean.

We just use a bit of tarp though.

Perhaps she meant a footprint carpet though? You can get footprint thin carpets (like big shaped picnic rugs really) too.

We have one ... for our monty 6

thsnk you!!

I thought it might have meant like a dooor mat to wipe your feet on the way in lol lol

FrazzledFairyFay · 13/04/2009 20:11

Thanks everyone. I did mean a footprint tarp. I have ordered a 2008 Vango and not many places have footprints left for it. I'm going to wait until I get it and I may then just order a large piece of tarp and do a DIY job

We ,well DH actually ,who is a bit of a clean freak cleans it and dries it as he rolls it up to put it away
