not liking the sound of wind though. And many memories of wet holidays in North Wales. I'm too much of a lightweight to relish the idea of camping in rain and wind....

Aaaaah - you have taken me back a good 10 yrs. Newlywed DH and myself go to shell island with my mum and dad.

Cue hideous storm - wind, rain, gales - the lot.

So we decide to strike camp a day early. The sight of my mum holding down my tent for all she is worth and it flapping upwards full of water and drowning her face and shoulders is something i will never forget. Am tittering now!

We enjoyed our time there though - Barmouth very nice too.

My Friend's DS was sick when we were there and she washed his sleeping bag in the launderette.
It's a lovely place.

Just use your common sense when looking for a pitch - camp in the lee of the dunes and think about which way you pitch your tent i.e don't put the entrance facing the sea!

You'll be fine

There were lots of dead jellyfish along the shore line when we went and the wind was blowing the sand on your legs so much it hurt!

I do have a photo somewhere of the dunes - I'll see if i can find it.

Nemoandthefishes · 20/07/2008 20:52

pitch behind one of the lovely sand dunes and will shelter a bit from the wind.Shell island is fab and you will love it

Nemoandthefishes · 20/07/2008 20:53

meant to agree beach can be a bit of a no go in the wind as it whips right up but actual camping is fine.

Lucycat · 20/07/2008 20:55

Can't find the actual photo that i wanted,(must be on the separate hard drive) but I've found one which was taken from Portmeirion and is looking across the bay towards Harlech - fantastic scenery - and we had the weather too!

Ooh, haven't been there for more than 12 years. Lovely spot, but it was VERY wet when we went, and there was definitely a laundry!
