Sleeping bags: if you buy a wider one, is it a pain on a standard sized mattress?

We have fat airics (first year of use!). To date we used a double airbed plus duvet but we figure we'll have to go into sleeping bags with the airics. IF as I want we buy wider-than-usual oblong sleeping bags will we end up with lots of us spilling over the edge of the airic, effectively on the ground?! We are both of average height and build so it's not that we're super-obese thus will obviously spill out all over the place! Anyone any ideas?
