Please tell me, which tent would you buy if you were starting out on camping life

Please. I know we should go to a show or something and look at them.

But is anyone willing to give me their opinion?

It would be used only for weekends away. I would prefer probably a 6 person one although there are only 4 of us.

I did start a thread earlier as we nearly bought one from Halfords for £99 as dh was attracted by freebies that came with it, but it didn't have a built in ground sheet. Have managed to persuade dh not to buy it on the advice of mn.

Is it a good idea to have one that colour codes with the ropes?

Please help me.

Pleadingly

Fimbo

Cabanon Barbados. feel free to ignore. Canvas is an aquired taste, and I am in a minority here on mn.

Pitches in 15mins. Warm and quiet. That real canvas smell. Will last for 20years. Makes you look exotically Dutch.

Please await arrival of martianbishop who is almost beside herself with excitement about the Quechua tent she has just bought.

pmsl, darn it she got here first

TheFallenMadonna · 07/07/2008 19:59

Oooh. I though my canvas tent made me look mundanely middle-aged...

Admittedly it is a true 1970s frame job, but you're right about the canvas smell.

you can't beat it can you FallenMadonna? Although mb's tent does pop up in an erotic manner which rather trumps my 'it has one large central pole' sales pitch.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/07/2008 20:03

I am loving the rapid erection it is true.

Blandmum · 07/07/2008 20:04

The fastest erection I have seen in many a day!

Instantaneous in fact

TheFallenMadonna · 07/07/2008 20:05

You wouldn't get that with an older tent...

Blandmum · 07/07/2008 20:06

it will sleep the three of us with ease. It would sleep you and your dh and you could get a £29 'pod' for the kids.

Jobs a good 'un!

Slubberdegullion · 07/07/2008 20:18

is a Quechuabishop name change in order on the camping threads then mb?

Fimbo · 07/07/2008 20:23

OOh Slubber - guess where I live? I do like that canvas one, although I am slightly swayed by MB.

Fimbo, you live in Barbados.......or Norwich ?

As I am promoting my tent its down sides are:
it's heavy, and has a big pack size
it's expensive
it's a bitch if its wet, you have to re-pitch it in the garden to dry it out
You have to look after the canvas. If you pack it away even slightly damp, it will go mouldy........and then will be only fit for the bonfire

BUT
no condensation
warm when it's cold
cool when it's hot (canvas breathes)
quiet when it's windy
really really strong design, will stand up to bad winds much better than a lot of other tents
will last and last and last

I have the 4 man, and she's beautiful

Fimbo · 07/07/2008 21:00

Barbados of course .

I think you have put me off your tent ever so slightly...... Will go check out NCL.

Cheers!
