Best tent setup for teens

Please could you tell me about your camping setups that work well with older kids and teens?. We need to replace our tent and our kids (10 and 13, opposite sexes) would prefer not to share a compartment. But I don't want to end up with a giant tent that won't fit in the car.

I also want a large outdoor but covered area for cooking etc.

I was thinking of getting 3 small popup tents and a gazebo, but DH thinks that would not fit in the car, and also some campsites charge per tent.

Check about the pup tents because commonly this year they are not allowed, well are a separate booking

I’d go for a 4 man tent with split bedroom for you, DH and the youngest dc and get a small 2 man tent for the older dc. A tarp for outdoor cooking if it’s wet.

pp are right though, that you’ll need to select your sites carefully to avoid extra charges.

3 pop up tents will easily fit in the car but won’t be great for camping. My teens, opposite sexes, don’t mind sharing a compartment as long as it’s large enough that they don’t roll into each other. They share our 4 man tent and me and the youngest share a cheap little double skin 2 man tent from Go Outdoors. The big tent isn’t that big, it’s a Vango 450XL, but has room for all 4 of us to sit on chairs inside if it’s raining. We have had to pay for 2 tents at campsites recently as the smaller sort of campsites we go to don’t generally recognise pup tents as a thing. I use a tarp for a porch to cook under in the rain.

If your teens absolutely have to have their own “rooms” then something like the Quechua 4 would do. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/4-person-2-bedroom-camping-tent-arpenaz-4-2/311103/m8562098 You can pole out the door as a porch for cooking, and have a 2 man for you and DP.

Decathlon also do a 6 man with 3 compartments. Their tents are excellent quality for the price. Alternatively, if you have 4 man with a big porch, you could put a little festival tent inside the porch since it's just for privacy.
