Which tent brand has the best blackout material for family camping?

Does anyone have views on which brand has best blackout material on their tents? I have read that Coleman has the best “true” blackout but they have none available of the style I want (tunnel, 6+ berth) so I’m looking at next best

possible options are vango and berghaus and they both seem ok - I’ve been to see both but at different shops so difficult to see objectively which blocks out more light

Outwell is truly dreadful

I have two young children and they’ll be up with the larks if too much light is in!! (See outwell comment above, I have learnt from experience!)

We have a Decathalon Fresh and Black tent which has a great blackout.

I don’t love the look of Quechua ones

Anyone used zempire?

I love my Fresh n Black!

Don't care what it looks like - does a brilliant job!

Berghaus is good. In 20 days of camping with out current tent the sun hasn't woken me early and that includes the recent blazing sun.

We used to have some excellent Patrol tents in my days in the Scouts. I'm not entirely sure how old they were, and we looked like something from about 1930 in comparison to other groups, but they were fantastic for blackout purposes! If ever I go camping ever again, I'll be splashing out on one of those so I can sleep, never mind any accompanying guests!

Face tent east and wear eye masks

I went to Go Outdoors and tested out all the blackouts. Berghaus were by far the best.

I ordered the fresh and black from Decathlon for a fraction of the price and the blackout is just as good as the Berghaus one.

We have the Coleman Octagon blackout. It's super dark with the internal blackout dividing section hung up, so we mostly just use it without that (gives more space in the tent too).
It's more like sun peaking through the edges of heavy curtains than full banish all the light. Easy to stay in bed till 8-9am while camping though. Other campers noise got us up.

Another vote for decathlon - we have two of their pop up 3 man tents and they are just amazing for quality and black out

How do you make a toddler wear an eye mask?! 🙄

We have a berghaus, a Vango and a Coleman!
I’d rank them in terms of darkness, Coleman 1st, Vango 2nd, Berghaus 3rd.
The Berghaus is new this season and for a
black out inner, it was very light in the mornings; the children didn’t wake up early but I was conscious of how light it was in the “black out” inner.
In the Coleman, you could easily oversleep it’s that dark!

Well as an update, they had no Coleman tunnel tents in stock, and the berghaus we wanted was fully sold out too

i went for a zempire which seems just as dark and I’m happy with

Coleman quality is crap. We have the weathermaster 8xl, and after 3 years, the blackout material is all peeling off.

Spareincoming · 19/08/2026 23:55

@Topa887 I’ve heard comments anbout the quality of the weathermaster from someone else too, the original one was better apparently!

We’ve got the spruce falls and it’s 5 seasons old and doing well.

We loved our zempire, had it when my youngest was a baby and it was amazing blackout wise, we have a Berghaus now as needed a much bigger tent, the black out is good, quality wise Zempire is so much better :)
