Tent recommendations please

I’ve just been away for a short camping trip and have come to the conclusion that I need a tent I can stand up in as crawling in and out of my little two person pop up tent is becoming a challenge.

The tent doesn’t need to be massive but it does need to fit the following criteria:

Not an air tent
Easy to put up for a solo 5ft tall person
When packed away, it needs to fit in the boot of my Smart ForTwo and leave sufficient space for all my other gear
Small porch area would be a bonus
I’m a bit claustrophobic so don’t like the really sloping sides of the pyramid style tents

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

I know you said no air tent but these are easier to put up solo. Berghaus air 400 is great.
Poled - have personally used Vango Icarus and a Eurohike 400 something, but never put up alone!

Just re-read re space in the car, I assume thats why you don't want an air tent?
The 2 poled ones I mentioned pack up fairly small

Thanks @CymruChris That’s exactly the reason, an air tent would take up pretty much the entire boot of my car. And they’re heavy. I’ll take a look at the other suggestions. Getting something with decent headroom but still easy to solo pitch seems to be a challenge.

I would look at something like this https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/4-person-camping-tent-arpenaz-4-1/4123/c98c241m8648383?utm_source=awin&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=Genie+Shopping_259955&utm_content=www.google.com&sv1=affiliate&sv_campaign_id=259955&awc=26895_1783589189_23bc56fb1de2400f580e93ff401f0b85

In the Decathlon one the groundsheet in the living area is clip in rather than sewn in.

Both smaller than an Icarus, for example.

Small tunnel tents can be put up single handed with practice. There is a series of YouTube Tube videos from Cross Camping and one features the Cross Camping Methid of putting up a tunnel tent solo.

I often camp solo and want a tent I can stand up in, and now have a canvas Dutch Pyramid (less slopey than bell / tipi tents) that I can put up on my own in less than 15 mins. But canvas tents have stringent maintenance hassles, are very expensive and very bulky.

It’s frustrating, There used to be a fabulous little Hi Gear Aura 3 tent that you could stand up in and the Vango Kalu that has just one arched pole, a doddle to put up solo.

But monster tents and air tents took over the market, I think.

Sendero 4 Family Tent

A great value four person tent with a large bedroom and porch, ideal for first time family campers and perfect for festivals. Easily pitched using its lightweight fibreglass poles (in reduced pole sleeves), the Eurohike Sendero 4 is a simple tent that'...

Thanks @Tabarnak There seems to be a real gap in the market for the type of tent I’m looking for. The Decathlon one looks promising though so I might pop to one of their stores to have a look.

My previous tent was a tunnel one and that was easy to put up. It just wasn’t quite high enough to stand up in though so I’ll look at something with more headroom.

I agree about the monster tents, there was one on the site I was at over the weekend which wouldn’t have looked out of place as an army field hospital it was that huge.

The thing is, for tents to be high enough to stand up in, they also need to be quite wide to be stable, and cease to be small.

Not sure if it would be too big but we loved our Outwell Rockwell three when it was just myself and my husband.

bk1981 · 10/07/2026 21:15

Just had a Google and the Outwell sky two looks similar but smaller. I was able to pitch our Rockwell by myself but it took about thirty minutes. I'm sure I would have got quicker with practise though!

Thank you @bk1981 I’ve had a look at the Outwell Sky and it fits all my criteria so I will probably go with that. I appreciate your help.
