Night time loo while camping

HmmmCat · 20/05/2026 10:22

In a fit of community-minded madness, I volunteered to support youth camping trip. I don’t mind camping at all, except for the nighttime loo trips. I’m 60, and even with HRT, at the miment there are a lot of nighttime loo trips. Normally I would just take a small, tightly lidded bucket, and wash it out every morning. But if I’m sharing a tenet with a non-family adult, well, I can’t really do that!

Is there any way if guaranteeing no nighttime peeing for a few nights?

Is there no toilet block?

rbe78 · 20/05/2026 10:56

Take your own tent? No way I'd be sharing a tent with a stranger, way too intimate!

countrygirl99 · 20/05/2026 10:58

They are probably thinking the same thing

EffortlesslyDirected · 20/05/2026 11:00

Surely you'd just go to the toilets, I've never gone inside a tent. Although I have heard of adults peeing into disposable nappies so they didn't have to leave a young child alone in a tent to go to the toilet block. No caffeine or alcohol, front load your liquid intake to the earlier part of the day.

7in1Pond · 20/05/2026 11:01

Is it a campsite?

Newmeagain · 20/05/2026 11:03

I think you need your own tent - if you are getting up then you will keep waking the person you are sharing with. And you don’t want to be lying there, thinking you need to go, but worrying about disturbing someone else…

Whattodo127845 · 20/05/2026 11:03

Pitch near the loo's and just use it. Do not pee in the tent with a stranger.

HmmmCat · 20/05/2026 11:35

There is a toilet block, but I don’t want to be tramping across the site twice a night. And, no, I do not want to pitch near the toilet block - worst of both worlds!

Well I don’t know what miracle you’re expecting? Either get your own tent or accept you’ll have to go to the toilet block a few times. I’d let the other person know though as they could get you frustrated you getting up in the night. Or they could experience the same themselves anyway!

whattodoforthebest2 · 20/05/2026 11:43

I had the same issue a few years ago when I was sharing a tent with my daughter's friend's Dad. We had separate pods in the tent and I CBA to go to the toilet block so I used a she-wee into a coke bottle and emptied it outside the tent so he never saw or heard anything. It took some practice beforehand but my system worked really well. I'd recommend giving it a try.

MyDuvetDay · 20/05/2026 11:46

Totally reasonable for you to bring your own tent OP. Why wouldn’t you?

HmmmCat · 20/05/2026 11:46

Well HRT was a bloody miracle! I went from peeing 3-4 times a night to sleeping through. I don’t know what’s happening right now, why I’m suddenly peeing again at night. I’m a last-minute replacement for this trip, and I guess I am looking for another miracle to take place in the next fortnight.

I wake in the night needing to wee and it’s crap when camping but I just get on with it.

Have a big jumper nearby to easily throw on. Place your shoes in a convenient place by the entrance. Keep a torch close by - although it’s usually not needed as you can see quite a lot at night once your eyes get used to it.

The benefits are that I’ve seen some amazingly beautiful night skies and sleep well once back in the tent.

EdgeofaRevolution · 20/05/2026 11:52

Just take a one woman tent and a bucket. I wouldn’t want to share a tent with another random person anyway!

LadyWiddiothethird · 20/05/2026 11:55

Get your own tent, they aren’t expensive. No way would I share a tent with someone I didn’t know very well.

AppleKatie · 20/05/2026 11:57

i agree you need your own tent.

i would/do also just go to the loo block at night but some prefer a bucket.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/05/2026 12:05

Go to the block and enjoy the stars and the night air, maybe spot a few nocturnal creatures.

Tabarnak · 21/05/2026 09:39

Borrow a tent and have your own tent.

I would feel self conscious, anyway, rustling about and all that unzipping and zipping to get out to the toilet block, bound to wake up your tent mate.

I wee in a food caddy bucket lined with a food compost bag and with cat litter in the bottom. Then put the bag in my rubbish bag. Or just wee in the bucket.

Tableforjoan · 24/05/2026 14:56

She wee and a bottle? Or just take a toilet tent and a bucket.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 30/05/2026 16:00

My instincts (and possibly too late if it’s this weekend - I hope you found a solution)..is either the bag-lined bucket with kitty litter already mentioned, or the bag-lined bucket with a baby nappy (as reasonably absorbent) - maybe one with skin side facing down at the bottom and a second with skin side facing up on top, in case of any overrun so it can be absorbed from the bottom of the bag, IYSWIM).

HmmmCat · 30/05/2026 17:10

All these pee-strategy suggestions are very kind, but really not relevant. Because they have the same problem as my tried-and-tested bucket system: they can’t be done in a shared tent.

I have spoken to the organisers and it’s quite funny, really. Turns out I will be the oldest person on site by about 20y, and it just hadn’t occurred to them that toilet trips might be an issue for older women (or older men, too, I suppose, but irrelevant). So it looks like I might be one of the few privileged adults to get a tent to herself. Just me and my little bucket 😉

Thank you to the poster who pointed out that all the to-ing and fro-ing, zipping and rustling would disturb my room-mate. It was a very good point for me to make. I didn’t even have to mention my 🪣

You definitely need your own tent. Glad to see your update that this is likely.

I recommend this www.amazon.co.uk/Shrinkable-Emergency-Portable-Outdoor-Reusable/dp/B0CZ2T7RVV/ which expands to 750ml and usually lasts me the whole night though you could buy two if you think you might exceed that. A lot less smelly and a lot less likely to spill than a bucket.

Tillow4ever · 30/05/2026 17:25

I have the multiple wake ups a night fit the toilet issue. I usually try to get within a minutes walk of the toilets. I’ve just come back from camping, and our pitch was a 5 minute walk away, in a second filed, and I wasn’t comfortable leaving my son in the middle of the night for 10-15 mins (nor would I have gotten back to sleep).

Luckily I take my camper toilet with me. What I do with that is our a commode liner with absorbent pad in the bottom, use it as needed in the night, then sprinkle some of those gel crystal things that make the pee all jelly like. In the morning, lift the bag out, tie it up and chuck it in the rubbish bins! Replace liners etc.

You can get a pop up toilet tent that you can have next to your main tent. Dead easy to put up etc. Although not great if very windy. But would mean you don’t have to traipse to the loos and don’t have to do it inside your tent with a stranger!

Sounds like it’s not going to ge an issue though if they will give you your own tent, and hopefully it is something they’ll consider in the future. I’m 46, so younger than you, and it’s been an issue for me for years now (I’ve tried discussing it with the drs but no-one is ever interested).
