I have a really basic and probably quite stupid question about camping and water/electricity

I haven't been camping for about 100 years so forgive my ignorance
when a campsite guide says that premium pitches are available with water/electricity/grey waste (whatever that is ...) is that just for touring caravans or can you get tent pitches with water/electricity

ok - you can get tent pitches & elec. Haven't heard of any with water. Grey waste is washing up water.... you'll pay alot more for a pitch with water (& it'll probably be a hard standing - not grass) but most sites have loads of water stations around for filling up smaller containers.....

ermm..you can get tent pitches with electricity, this is fairly common. Have never come across a tent pitch with water, but we tend to go camping in fields, so I am not very well up on de-luxe camping arrangements.
presumably the grey waste is for throwing away washing up water and the like. It does sound rather caravan-ish.

perhaps you could ring them and phrase it to say "what facilities do your tent pitches have" rather than reveal your anxiety

These are usually for caravan, etc the water and elec plugs into the caravan for constant use and the grey waste dirty washing water (not loo). You could pitch on it but would probably be hard standing (if you can get your pegs in) but wouldn't really use the water or grey waste much, haven't they got any with just elec and not hardstanding??

as Bladee says...if you have a tent, there is no point at all in paying ££ not to have to walk a few feet to a tap.

naturally if you have a caravan it is handy to be able to connect up to everything.

It's aimed at touring caravans. Tents can get electricity hook up if they have a lead and want to run various electrical things from it. Premium pitches mean that caravans can have their water containers directly hooked up to the tap, their waste water (grey waste) directly hooked up to the waste drain and a lead for mains electricity.

Grey waste is just waste water, not to be confused with the other kind which goes into your loo or portapotti and is emptied down an appropriate place.

All my campsites recently have come with water.

Huge great puddles of the stuff.

You can get tent pitched with electricity, but you tend to pay a slight premium.

If you want to use the electricity you have to have a proper EHU electrical hook up, these are safe to use outside, properly earthed etc.

You can buy them in caravanning shops more often than camping shops

Tent pitches generally come with or without electricity. The rest of the facilites tend to be communal.

Agree completely with mbs point about the proper ehu as well - most sites simply won't let you use anything other than a proper one. And don't take your kettle from home and your 2kw toaster or you'll blow the electrics ont he site and will not be popular with the other campers!

But you don't need a water point or the grey waste facility.

We take our kettle and toaster, and a fan heater (warms the tents before we undress - magic!), and have never blown fuses!

There are usually water pipes dotted around anyway so you won't far t go to fill your kettle up.

Then you are lucky crystaltips!

We take a travel kettle, much lower voltage as it's a bugger to have the electricity go out half way through making a cuppa!
