First time as a family under canvas this weekend , off to Hollands Wood, New Forest .

Anyone been there, whats it like , are facilties OK, ie hot showers / clean toilet blocks ( you can tell I'm new to this ).

A bit of a trial this weekend to see if we have everything we need for a trip, going with friends so what we dont have hopefully they will !

Yes, I've been its lovely.

Loo block was always clean, showers were warm. Not enough space to hang your clothes up to keep them dry though so take a plastic bag to bundle all your clothes in while showering.

Take a potty/bucket for night time wees.

And try and keep all food in squirrel proof containers as they will come in the tent.

Have a good time. There are lovely walks/bike rides into the forest from the campsite.

Yep we like it as well, lovely site- bit far for ds4 this year but definitely back next.

MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 11:43

and there are loose ponies so don't get a shock if you go for a dawn wee

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/05/2008 11:49

I was watching Animals Do The Funniest Things a few weeks ago and there was a video of a pony strolling into someone's tent - I'm sure it was filmed at Holland's Wood.

Surfermum · 21/05/2008 11:50

Yes, keep all your food in containers with lids on as the ponies wander throughout the camp. They even got the lid off one of ours last year!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/05/2008 12:09

Watch out for the cows too

fabulous campsite - try and aim for the right hand side if you want to wake up and watch ponies grazing or towards the back if you like them strolling through the evening dusk - they appear silently and magically from the trees

dylsmum1998 · 21/05/2008 12:52

oh wow i wanna go! i'd never get dd to bed she's be catching herself a pony! she's inherited her mums love of animals

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:13

the ponies are gorgeous, holmsley is better for ponies (loads congragate) but i prefer holmsley tbh, though holmsley apparently has been made over.

sometimes the forest sites run warden led nature walks as well.

CaptainUnderpants · 21/05/2008 13:17

Oh blimey , dont mind squirrels in the tent but a cow or pony !

Is it best to keep food locked in the car overnight ?

Oh this could be fun - a weekend without my hairdryer and waking up to ... well who knows !

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 13:18

we kept food in the tent with no problems

dylsmum1998 · 21/05/2008 13:35

oh now i need to work out if my miniscule budget can manage a stay in the new forest this summer, along with our week in wales, a car MOT and my cousins wedding which so far we all going to in the nude

i want to go everywhere. am so excited now i have all my own camping equipment, dont need to rely on my xp being in a good mood to go away.
i'm almost jumping up and down with excitement and cant decide where to go first!!

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:39

forest holiday sites are very good price wise actually

dylsmum1998 · 21/05/2008 13:41

yeah i just b een checking it out. must start saving hard. then i can go there too, shme student loans dont arrive til sept

lurkingdad · 21/05/2008 22:41

I haven't been for a while but when we went years ago the boy racers had a lovely habit of driving past the site in the night beeping their horns. It could have been a one off but I would recommend away from the road side.

And as someone who works in Lyndhurst (you'll drive past my office probably) do NOT come off junction 1 to get into Lyndhurst. You will queue for 2 or 3 miles into Lyndhurst on Thursday or Friday night. Come off at junction 3 and go down the M271 then along the A35 through Ashurst. Junction 2 works as well but 3 is fastest.

Thanks Lurkingdad - will have another look the map.
