Camping in the South of France, within 100 (ish) miles of Avignon, looking for a lovely place to stay, not just camp site.

We are getting a car train to Avignon mid July, and will be driving from there. I've booked a camp site near to Frejus (not too far from CAnnes and St Raphael), but I'm really having second thoughts because I'm worried that the traffic there will be horrendous, and everything too expensive etc etc.
I'm wondering if heading west rather than East from Avignon would be a better idea, but really feel at a loss, just want to go somewhere lovely.
I have the Alan Rogers guide which I'm ploughing through, but it's not giving much info about the places. Am going to go and get a decent guide book (recommendations???) but wanted to ask you well travelled for some advice.

Arles is very nice. I spent my honeymoon there. Montpellier is also a gorgeous town with a great Olympic size swimming pool and twisty slides- spent a lot of time there. The seaside can be pretty tacky down there though- avoid Sete, for example.

The Ardeche area is lovely, with river beaches and lots of outdoorsy activities. Quieter than Provence too.
