We’ve not been that early in the year before, any tips for camping in spring?

Do you have children? I camped in May and swore never again. It was beyond freezing and we were all exhausted as couldn't sleep

Souredgrapes · 11/01/2025 20:01

Easter camp 2013 and the ground and cars were frozen solid . We had good kit and the right clothing . We camped with three other families and was one of my favorite camps ever because of all the communal activities ( ie in each others tents / cooking food / silly games ) .

ProudCoralBear · 11/01/2025 20:05

We do have children all under 7. We love camping and have had some pretty bad rain and low temps in the summer months but wondering if April is just too early with young kids.

I have camped out of season with the kids. It was fun as we were with friends but hard work and I will only camp June-August now!

dingledangledoos · 11/01/2025 20:06

I think there's a high likelihood that it'll be really cold at night which isn't fun for anyone. I'd wait till May, personally.

Easter is late so you may be lucky. It is hard to tell. I would probably go anyway with small kids - take all the gear and come home if you need to.

Feelingstrange2 · 11/01/2025 20:08

I camped May Day Bank Holiday and still remember how cold it was now! Probably 20 years ago!

Also early in the season it gets dark early.

I'm not a fan of camping anyway, so I'm not the best person to ask, but it was darn cold

Julipdreams · 11/01/2025 20:10

We have camped in April the last 2 years and considering it again. It was fine but only with electric hook up so we can have a small heater.

Yes it is too. Early! . We had a lovely easter in about 2015 and even then it was so cold at night we had an electric blower going and we went home two nights early.

A couple of years ago, out wetsuits frozen solid overnight!
But the year before that, the kids were running around in shorts and tshirts

Weve got it pencilled on, but will see what the weather does

Me and DH often camp in March but we have a bell tent and woodburning stove. We have camped -5 outside and the tent was +23 inside. We had good sleeping bags and woollen blankets too. And yes, we do take fire extinguishers, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for safety. We had snow and the scenery was beautiful.

DuesToTheDirt · 11/01/2025 20:39

Nights will probably be really cold. We did it once and I just couldn't get properly warm during the day after being so cold at night. For me though the worst part isn't really the nights, it's the evenings when you don't want to get in bed yet, but you keep thinking about it, just to try and get warm!

GRCP · 11/01/2025 20:45

Even in late May you need an electric heater at night IME

DuesToTheDirt · 12/01/2025 13:41

We had a camping trip booked for a long weekend in May one year - we bailed a few days before it, when the weather forecast was for snow...

EveryDayisFriday · 13/01/2025 07:44

I'm hoping to go in March, we last camped first weekend in November and I'm missing it. Happy to camp in 10c+ and dry weather. Wet, windy and colder than that, I'm not interested. We go EHU with a heater and just bought warmer sleeping bags.

mitogoshigg · 13/01/2025 07:55

We go in March, it's ok as long as you have the right kit

It's fine, if you have decent sleeping arrangements!

We camp in spring, and sleep in hats and gloves etc, off the ground, blankets as well as proper sleeping bags etc

Way too cold for us at Easter - mid May is about earliest I can comfortably manage.

It's like the air is too cold to breathe comfortably at night if that makes sense.

Kids will probably be fine, they generally are especially when younger it was just me and eldest dd that found it uncomfortable.

Would a caravan or a lodge be more sensible at that time of year. At least you would all be warm in the evenings.

TinyMouseTheatre · 18/01/2025 09:14

I've camped in April with EHU. We took plastic backed picnic blankets and put them under the SIMs. Lots of things to put in at night if it's cold like fluffy socks and a fleece. It was the first week of April that we went and it was fine.
