I walked past my local campsite and saw a tent set up. Are they mad? It has been raining buckets here and blowing a gale. Anyone camping in that wants their head examining.

Me too. Nothing against camping. Love it in face. Just not in March.

Not for me either
Martian camping starts at whitsun and no sooner!

hercules1 · 29/03/2008 19:24

Whistun whilst we have children with us but if we ever get a carava it will be easter.

Scramble · 29/03/2008 23:08

Easter week would be my earliest under canvas, but even then I have had a couple of freezing weeks over the years in awnings with snow on the ground.

I might do a couple of overnights this easter, but in the van on the way to the hotel .

I really can't wait to go but even I wouldn't go in March - I have done though in the pre kids days

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/03/2008 20:39

We are going in a weeks time and having seen the long term forecast I really really think we need our heads checking! unfortunately we are going to the Isle of Wight and have already booked the ferry so it makes it harder to cancel.

DH had a weekend in Belgium/Holland a fortnight ago - he didn't really think it through and slept in all his clothes but survived

twinsetandpearls · 30/03/2008 20:54

Our first camping trip was over an Easter holiday, we were talking about going this easter but I don;t think so this year.

When is whitsun?

Surfermum · 30/03/2008 20:59

Lol must be hardy sorts [grin. Not for me I'm afraid and I love camping!

I once knew a surfer who went down to the West Country surfing and would camp. He said he would hang his wettie outside the tent and in the morning would have to chip the ice off it before getting back into it to go in the sea .

Compare that to my surfing holidays in a luxury villa, in October when the sea's at its warmest. I'd come off the beach, shower and leap straight into the jacuzzi and sauna. And the wettie and rash vest would be put on the heated towel rail in the bathroom.

Whitsun means Spring Bank, twinset. Whitsun used to be some time in June generally - moveable feast related to Easter - but the last Mon in May replaced it.

silverbirch · 31/03/2008 10:56

We were camping in Easter in the snow - kids loved it. It was our second trip this year. On the first trip we had sheets of ice on the outside of the tents but were very cosy and warm inside.

You do need good (therefore fairly expensive) equipment to enjoy it in the cold but we did a lot of trekking/camping in the mountains in our pre-children days.

redwino · 31/03/2008 16:04

To me one of the joys of camping is sitting outside your tent in the evening with friends enjoying a drink or two. Can't see how you can do that in March particulary in the snow!
I shall be waiting for Whitsun myself. Better book soon as it sounds like everyone else is waiting for Whitsun too!

we're going in a fortnight, only been once before so we had better enjoy it as much

dustystar · 02/04/2008 12:14

We ususally camp at easter. Its cold at night but wrapping up is part of the fun. We still sit outside the tent at night with a glass of wine Too bloody cold and wet this year though

FourJays · 16/04/2008 14:55

My SIL made us all go in October one year IN SCOTLAND!!! It was minus 1 and kids and I were crying - she's hardier than me.
