suggestions on who might want large, good quality, canvas tent

Am in process of moving, so issue of clearing garage has become more pressing. I'm storing large, 4 person, canvas (safari style) good quality tent there which we bought for £800 when lived abroad in tropical climate. However in meantime have got divorced, can't shift it easily alone, and am back in Blighty.

I get one idea is putting it up with a friend, taking photos and putting it on ebay in hope; any ideas of other ways of either selling it (ie organisations that take second hand tents), or good causes near Milton Keynes, on M1, which might want a good quality tent? Its pretty heavy and takes two to put it up, so not the kind of thing you could take camping without a car, nor that you'd want to put up for a day only. On the other hand for a weekend or week it is brilliant. Thanks for any ideas

Who ever you sell to is going to want to inspect it. As it’s been stored away, it might have mildewed or been nibbled on by rodents. I’d put it up one sunny day so you can accurately assess its condition. Take photos and then look for a buyer. Gumtree is a good place. You could join a Facebook camping page and post there too.

Instead of finding somewhere to give it to, just take a photo of it rolled up (or in the bag or whatever) and put it on Facebook market place for £5 (with measurements) and state whether it comes with poles (and whether the poles are fibreglass etc), guy ropes, tent pegs, etc. Better than faffing around putting it up etc.

Measurements are the most important thing, not how many people it sleeps because tents are so variable.

I got rid of my 2 man inflatable kayak this way a couple of years ago before a house move.

Is there a girlguiding or scouting campsite local to you? They might be interested in taking it off your hands.

call it a bell tent not a safari tent. Bell tents are quite trendy among those with big gardens and children. It will get more interest with that name!

Oh you're brilliant. Great suggestions thank you. Please do keep them coming, very grateful. Problem shared is a problem halved and all that, thanks.

Medieval/Renaissance/Civil War re-enactors love canvas tents too.

redmapleleaves1 · 21/01/2024 11:54

@SummerFeverVenice I love the idea of it going off and living its best life with reenactors :) Off to google some now.

Oh, plus those Viking re-enactors!

Any Forest Schools nearby?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/01/2024 13:21

Unless you are hoping to get some money back from it, I would just put it on gumtree 'free to collect'

helpfulperson · 21/01/2024 13:32

agree local scout group or centre would be in interested,

Justkoko · 21/01/2024 13:39

Don't call it a bell tent if its not a safari tent! Two very different things! You'll save more hassle if it's listed correctly. Best if you can list the make and model and then the dimensions etc are easy to find.

Coming back to report, in case this helps anyone else. Took your advice, checked its condition was as I'd remembered, took photos of it in its bag, and also unrolled to show no mould (but not put up). Added photos of a similar one erected (clearly noted not this one), the spec, and advice to google this if wanting more information on the spec. Posted on ebay at 1/3 of the new price, for pick up only. Got lots of interest, and sold at asking price within a week. Very little hassle in the end.

Canvas tents are much sought after fgs don't offer it for a fiver!

We recently sold one for hundreds of pounds, enough to buy a significantly larger tent we could actually lift.

Sold on fb marketplace

TempleOfBloom · 11/02/2024 22:24

I bet the buyers think they got a bargain! Canvas tents are very much in demand at the moment, bell, Touareg and Dutch pyramid styles.
