Has anyone got any experience hiring a motorhome or camper off this website? Trust pilot overall seems quite good. It’s our first time considering hiring so I’d appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Where are you going to be with your hired MoHo/Camper?

We've just booked a pretty basic VW Campervan for a few days on the Hebrides in September. We know Harris like the back of our own hands and are aware of weather etc. There's a specific event we're going for.

Gobooney seems to be some sort of consolidator for small/independent hire providers. I looked at it but in the end found a hire company near Inverness from my own searches that fitted the bill for us.

We had a very bad experience with Goboony and the owner of the vehicle, we were informed prior to confirming the booking the vehicle was suitable to take our 15month baby as long as we provide the car seat. However after we confirmed the booking the owner couldn't guarantee it. We terminated the agreement before the booking started to get a refund. As a result of the situation Goboony didn't refund any of our monies. We are a family from Australia and we lost the equivalent of $1000 for a trip we never took. Goboony and the owner acted in bad faith. We are currently escalating the situation externally.

I am sure it would be fine but if this is the sort of middle man for people who own campers to rent them I would be very surprised if they have a back up plan, so if the vehicle returns from Hire Saturday morning and is due to go out again in the afternoon, if it has an issue you are stuck. I assume they have no hard and fast standards?

This - we've just finished a hire with Goboony and although the initial process worked well, we did have a few issues and Goboony themselves weren't much use at all. in our case we had an issue with the sliding door sticking and when we let the owner know he suggessted that we get it looked at while we were there .. but in the end we decided we could live wth it.

however, if the van was due to go out again on the Saturday afternoon , there would have been no time to get it fixed between us dropping off at 12 and the next people picking it up at 3 . i don't know what would have happened in that case .

they were also extremely hard to get hold of by phone while we were away and resorted to communicating by email when actually , a quick converstaion would have resolved things much quicker.
My recommendation to anyone going ahead with them ( or other similar companies) are:

  1. make sure you take out the excess insurance
  2. have a printed copy of their customer support details and insurance documentation - don't rely on trying to find this on their website via your phone in the rain
  3. take out separate travel insurance - ideally one that covers you for onward travel/ accomodation if there is an issue with the van that cannot be fixed quickly en route

Having said all that - when things go well, its a very good service

Just glad you didn’t let it spoil your holiday
