Camping and DH forgot half our gear

msmatcha · 30/05/2023 17:06

In car heading North on M6. I've spent all morning grocery shopping, packing food, kids gear etc etc. DH had to remember two things - a) the trailer which contains all camping gear, tent, chairs, bbq. B) the crate in the garage with all the other bits - pans, plates, cups, cutlery, tea towels, all the essential bits and pieces.

We have the trailer. We have no crate. I'm trying very very hard not to call him names. Like twat for instance.

Just come back from camping and the family in the opposite corner of the field forgot all the indie rooms of their tent.

The husband had to go back the next morning and complete a 6 hour round trip to fetch them.

I forgot to pack DH any trousers once on a camping trip to the peaks 😂

He forgot towels another time.

We've all done it OP. Throw him a bone here lol

Oh yes all is completely forgiven now. I was just temporarily raging on the M6.

For my camping trip last week I forgot a washing up sponge and some teaspoons. I'm very happy with that. I did have to get a new SIM after a slow leak left me on the floor every morning.

StamppotAndGravy · 31/05/2023 22:20

We come back with extra teaspoons every year. They're like a postcard in the cutlery drawer. We mostly cycle camp so there's a point where we can just move the bikes, they're so heavily loaded. If they're easy to get started, we've forgotten something! So long as we've remembered the bottle opener, all is well.

@msmatcha I always think a good conversation starter on Mumsnet is a good thing. And on this section, you’re very much among friends.

DH left the stove behind once but Aussie campgrounds have free bbq’s and camp kitchens so not the end of the world.

BingandSulaandFlop · 03/06/2023 07:45

My parents once forgot the tent poles! We had to borrow some from the site (thankfully they had some!)

NotSorry · 16/06/2023 12:55

We've never forgotten anything for camping or caravanning (we're caravanners these days) but we've had a lot of mishaps. One of them was putting the tent down, locking it in the trailer (with a super duper expensive impenetrable padlock my husband had bought) when we realised he'd left the car keys with the padlock keys attached to them in the pocket of the tent... these days we travel with 2 separate sets of keys, one set in my handbag

I am sad as DH and DH are just about to take off on a flight I was supposed to be in, so I'm now imaging what sort of missing items they'll have to buy in Spain - s thank you for cheering me up

MrsKeats · 16/06/2023 13:07

I thought the point of holidays was to be separated from your tea towels? So I'm on dh side Smile

imayhavelostmymarbles · 16/06/2023 13:12

We bought a new tent which came in several bags. Packed the car, drove to the Derbyshire dales, only to discover that none of the bags we had been sold had poles in them. They had missed that bit out!
Poor DH had to drive to the nearest (2 hours away) store to collect some poles.

oh no whats stopped you going?

drawingmaps · 16/06/2023 13:20

We forgot the outer section of our tent once. We had to buy a cheap tent that just fit all of us in and do without the living compartment for the week.

Mariposista · 16/06/2023 14:15

Find a nice pub! Who wants to be cooking on holiday anyway!

crackofdoom · 16/06/2023 16:37

I've never been away on a camping trip without forgetting something. It was olive oil and card and paper to start the fire with last time. Managed with butter, toilet roll and dry grass respectively.

GayPareeee · 16/06/2023 16:40

@qod had a malignant melanoma removed from head a few weeks ago and not healed enough for 4 days in circa 40 degree heat as can't cover it. Tbh given the temps am not as gutted as I would otherwise be

GayPareeee · 16/06/2023 16:43

These stories are cheering me up, always forget something. When ds was a month we went away for a few nights and DH forgot to pack his case. So, no bottles/formula/baby grows/nappies etc. It's amazing what you actually need when it comes down to it!

FirstTimeNameChanger · 17/06/2023 22:52

We once travelled 7 hours to a campsite, and arrived to realise DH had forgotten the centre pole for the bell tent. Without that pole you essentially don't have a tent. Trying to find something 'lying around' the campsite that might do as a substitute pole was fun 😬 before a last minute dash to the nearest Argos for a new tent!

We've also spent a frantic half hour looking for the car keys, just about ready to drive away, before DH remembered he had left them in the inner tent pocket of said, very heavy and difficult to unpack, bell tent.

I once forgot the cafetiere which was fucking tragic in the morning when we realised. We tried to make coffee using a (clean) sock as a filter.

All part of the joys of camping!

Camping in North Wales in December.

DP left my sleeping bag at home. He had a very cold and miserable night as I obviously laid claim to his.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 17/06/2023 23:02

We once had to go to B&M to buy towels at the start of a camping trip - still talk about it, still use the towels!

Soproudoflionesses · 17/06/2023 23:13

Reading thread makes me so glad we sold our campervan!

Trumpton · 17/06/2023 23:21

We were travelling to Cornwall from home which included a 4 hour ferry crossing and a 400 mile drive.
I carefully packed 3 lots of meals for 5 of us into a cold bag. Snacks, drinks, labelled rolls to last us for the long day.
We got to the boat and I asked DH to get cold bag from boot. “What cold bag?” “ The one I left in front of the door”. “Oh it was in my way so I moved it”

I had to ring my dad and tell him to let himself into our house and feed himself for the next 5 days!
Money was short in those days and ferry food and motorway food for 5 really cramped our budget!

Oh bless you. Hope it heals well and not too painful 💐

Been there, done that etc.

When our kids were between 4/6 and leaving home for Uni we had Khyam Rigidome Tent which needed floor tarps over its entire covered area and a 3*3 metre groundsheet for the centre living space.

En route to Dover from Northampton and somewhere near Hemel Hempstead when kids were well into teens we realised the tarps/groundsheet was still at home.

After a quick hold of 4 times around M1 J8 we decided to carry on rather than going home and trying to re-book the ferry.

Decathlon at Rouen had all we needed...

Wronghouse · 30/06/2023 09:05

I camp every year with my sister and kids, leaving our DPs at home. We always order a Tesco delivery to save on car space so we'd set up the tents and waited for the delivery which didn't arrive and at the time of the delivery DP rang me asking why he had a Tesco delivery full of water, wine, cereal and sweets (amongst other things!)... I'd not changed the address! Tesco luckily organised a re delivery the following day but the only slot they had was midnight 😂.

In the meantime we'd managed to pack a few essentials like soup so we could feed the kids so all was fine...... until I realised I'd also forgotten to pack any pans. !!!

It was the start of a catalogue of disasters on one of the wettest weeks we've ever camped but it's one of our most memorable ones and we still laugh about it now.

Men aren’t naturally incompetent, they’ve learnt and been enabled to be incompetent. It drives me mad.

I’m not blaming you, OP. Just society.
