Camping and DH forgot half our gear

msmatcha · 30/05/2023 17:06

In car heading North on M6. I've spent all morning grocery shopping, packing food, kids gear etc etc. DH had to remember two things - a) the trailer which contains all camping gear, tent, chairs, bbq. B) the crate in the garage with all the other bits - pans, plates, cups, cutlery, tea towels, all the essential bits and pieces.

We have the trailer. We have no crate. I'm trying very very hard not to call him names. Like twat for instance.

Sounds like you need a trip to Home Bargains..

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 30/05/2023 17:10

Take away and dh pays.. Dh once forgot ds's travel cot. And one of ds's bags. That was next to the one he did remember.. The one he forgot had tents on...

Christmascracker0 · 30/05/2023 17:11

It will be a funny story one day - it will def be the one thing the kids remember of the trip🤣

Beautifulsunflowers · 30/05/2023 17:15

Reminds me of the time my dad forgot to pack a whole suitcase when we went camping. We were taking my friend with us so my parents had to argue about it in a polite way!!! He had to go back the next morning to get it.
monkey now I’m wondering if people actually pack a suitcase for camping? Not a rucksack or hold-all type bag?

This just reminds me the time my dad grabbed a load of clothes off the bed that was in fact just the laundry and not what he thought was his clothes my mum had pulled out for him (something she had no intention of doing for him), so they had to make a trip to the shops for pants 😂

There is a pub 20 mins from the site so we might be enjoying their burgers rather than mine tonight. DH defo paying.

You are allowed to call him a twat once but then you have to laugh about it for the rest of the trip. Or don’t have a go at him but take the piss mercilessly for the entire trip. He won’t do it again.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/05/2023 17:20

My parents forgot one of the boxes of food and it was the Easter weekend and in those days shops really were closed for Sundays and Bank Holidays. We ate some peculiar meals until the shops opened again on the Tuesday.

MotorwayDiva · 30/05/2023 17:21

Takeaway tonight, sainsburys were selling off some plastic picnic stuff this weekend. Or whereabouts are you camping someone local.maybe able to point in right direction.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/05/2023 17:22

XH booked a holiday cottage in Wales for us and our five small children. This was back in the olden days when bookings were all done by phone, with letters for confirmation, all that, so there was no chance for me to double check (not that I would have done, he was supposed to be a responsible adult, with a Big Job).

When we got there, and started bathing the children before bed, there were no towels. No tea towels, no bath towels, no hand towels. Apparently this had been stated on the confirmation letter - which he hadn't bothered to read. Had to dry the children on T shirts.

Then we had to drive, late at night, to the local ASDA to buy loads of towels. I've still got them somewhere, which is more than I can say for the husband.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 30/05/2023 17:22

Is there a hedgerow near where you are camping? He can eat off giant leaves for the rest of the trip and dry up using one of his shirts.

We once went on holiday and my father left the front door open. Not just unlocked, completely open. After about three days one of the neighbours thought it was weird and closed it.

Ok I'm starting to feel better now. At least we aren't having to hunt down pants. Hee!

Stopped at a services and now have four Costa cups, some swizzlers and sugar and salt and some cutlery. Also some very nice VERY expensive plates.

This is excellent advice and I'm taking it. Didn't even say twat because children.

I could not hack this separate finances stuff

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 30/05/2023 17:27

My parents, back in the eighties when money on holidays was complicated, left the travellers' cheques at home when we went to France for three weeks. They spent a lot of time on the phone trying to sort that one out.

msmatcha · 30/05/2023 17:28

Oh and apparently we have no bbq coals either.... the services we looted had sold out.

I deliberately forget our cooking box every time Grin. If I'm suffering camping no way as I cooking. ''Tis what pubs are for

Squeaky2023 · 30/05/2023 17:31

My DH once brought ready to bake croissants for a camping trip when we were students. He insisted they weren't that bad and ate them.
Nearly 30 years on, it still makes me laugh to think about it.

blobby10 · 30/05/2023 17:32

When I was a teenager, we took out trailer tent on a very rare foray to the south of France . After a two day journey we arrived to find dad had forgotten the tent pegs AND the kettle! He wasn’t amused having to try and explain in his not very good French to the non English speaking site owner that he needed to buy some pegs! Thankfully it wasn’t windy so we got away with it and had a lovely time 😎

MardiBras · 30/05/2023 17:32

We were camping one summer when a new family arrived on the site. We were sat enjoying a glass of wine when all hell let loose - they had forgotten the tent poles! They drove back home and returned the following day.

Scont · 30/05/2023 17:34

Dp packed for the children to go away in their gps motor home and managed to only pack age 3-4 boys clothes for 2 boys one of which was 4 but the other one was 9 also not sure what he thought their sister was going to wear, , I understand that she can wear her brothers clothes but she was 11. They had to go to Asda the next day.

gogohmm · 30/05/2023 17:35

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat

I never trusted exh to anything holiday related, I even booked the dates with his PA! Well fast forward and I get a sheepish call from him asking how holiday insurance works (yes he's very clever, internationally recognised in field, can't work out how to claim on his travel insurance) useless he was. If you want a job done right we do it ourselves! (Actually poor dp is still bemused that I won't trust him to do things. He is far more reliable)

MaverickSnoopy · 30/05/2023 17:35

This reminds me when DH forgot to pack the buggy for our then 6mo. Discovered it at the service station when getting out of the car and asked him to get it out. This is after I'd asked him as we were leaving the house if he'd remembered to pack the buggy! A trip to Argos sorted it but I was very annoyed!!! Your situation is worse though, although I reckon you can milk this one for quite a while!

NotMeNoNo · 30/05/2023 17:45

We have forgotten so much stuff over the years that I check out the nearest supermarket and camping shop in advance of trips. Lots of our kit is effectively mementoes of past trips. Gas bottle is a frequent offender as it's sorted in a different place. Forgetting the mallet is worst as it makes putting the tent up difficult.
