Anyone ever use a tent on the roof of the car?

I have been recommended a roof top tent for an upcoming weekend getaway up in the lake district. Are the worth the cost? and realistically how much weight can it handle before we are damaging the car itself?
prob silly questions but if anyone has experience Id love to hear it.

No, no awning, though I have considered it. I may give it a try by just stringing up a tarp from the box, to see how much difference it makes before splashing out on one .

Yeah a difficult one to consider. I guess it really depends if you want to cook, clean and relax in that area or if you spend most of your time away from the car then you won't need it.

But given the weather in the UK it is good to get protection from the rain or the 1 month in the year the Sun is actually unbearable!
