A family of 4 (kids 7,3) and we'd like to get into camping. Looking to buying our first tent and overwhelmed by choice! We like the look of the Vango Joro 600 poled tent and fits the budget (max £600). Does anyone have this? And thoughts? Or anything else that might meet our requirements in the same sort of budget?

We've got a poles Vango tent and really like it. I think they make decent tents - there are always lots of them on campsites.

We have the Joro 600XL but in the airbeam version, and we love our tent (but most tent owners say that about their individual tents!) You're doing the right thing by going for a tent that sleeps +2 more than your family size, as you cannot get six beds across a 6-bed tent, the measurements are based on bedrolls!

I agree re size, a 6 person tent should be fine for 4 people.

We just took things from home to begin with when we started camping, then added to our camping kit over time.

There's always lots of camping kit (including tents!) on FB marketplace if you've got time to look there.

We bought the vango Langley poled 600xL a few years ago for a family of 5 (kids are now 6,6 and 3) it's absolutely brilliant size wise and easy to put up.

This is good to hear! We've decided to go for the air beam version. Good to hear it's a good tent. Can I ask how you find the light in the bedrooms? It comes with 'nightfall' bedrooms but DH is worried they will be too light (our kids are already early risers so I'm not sure it will make a difference!)

Whatever you do choose one with blackout sleeping compartments. That way the DC might not be awake at dawn!! Made that mistake with our first tent and now have a Quechua fresh n black 4 man for 4 of us. It’s a snug fit but we only do the odd night or two with all of us and the sleeping areas are lovely and dark.

Yes, our Vango tent had some labelling about night time bedrooms or something similar - it's not great. But our Coleman tent has blackout bedrooms and they're fab. It depends how much it bothers you though - I find an eye mask pretty effective (and cheaper than a new tent 😄).

Quite dark but not full blackout, is my opinion!
