Food essentials

I'm planning a summer holiday round trip of wales camping with my two boys (11&9). Just trying to think ahead on food essentials I should take? We have a double stove, pots & pans etc but I'm now thinking about quick easy cooking ideas. We have a beach hut and I tend to cook a bit there.. hot dogs / burgers / pasta one pots and so on. I doubt I'll cook all the time but but some suggestions from you experienced campers would be fabulous

Quick cook pasta
Boil in the bag rice
Packets of flavoured couscous (just add water)
Pancake mix shaker
Porridge pots - no cooking involved and no washing up!
Tinned curry, bolognese and chilli
Jar of pesto
Falafel mix - just add water, leave to stand, shape into balls and fry. Serve with pitta or flat breads, or the flavoured couscous mentioned above
Sachets of coffee and hot chocolate
Marshmallows

Bag of stir fry veg, noodle and sauce and fry up! So easy and simple

TheGirlWhoLived · 28/06/2022 06:17

I feel like couscous is often forgotten in these situations!

greenacrylicpaint · 28/06/2022 06:22

tinned ravioli

it The.Law. to have tinned ravioli sauce diluted by rain at least once on a camping trip.

Fajitas or those taco boats - we love them. Fry up chicken, peppers, onion and spice if you like it. Have some dips or sauces to hand and everyone can make their own.

Boil in the bag rice
The pre-cooked microwave rice sachets are far easier. Just a splash of water in a pan and heat through. No need to boil water.

Fe2O3Girl · 28/06/2022 08:51

We take a frozen bolognese or chilli that keeps the cool box cold for a couple of days and then makes an easy meal.

Pilaf type meals (now named “camping rice” by my friends daughter) are tasty one pot meals. You can measure out the rice and herbs/spices and stick it in a bag all together so you just need to fry onion/garlic then add your rice and water.

faffadoodledo · 28/06/2022 13:50

@Fe2O3Girl we do the same. Sorts out the first and sometimes second night too. And provides a handy lump of frozen matter to keep the rest of the ice box cool!
Just add to the pan with a pouch of Uncle Ben's spicy rice.
I'm not one for chopping and prepping while actually camping but am happy to do the work beforehand

PritiPatelsMaker · 02/07/2022 22:33

I usually take a chilli I've frozen and we eat those cheap tortilla chips with then on the first night.

How’s the camping going? I was thinking about you, hopefully you have good plans for the weather! We were too busy not mentioning rain that we forgot to not mention hottest ever heatwave

biggirlpantson · 17/07/2022 17:48

@TheGirlWhoLived we set off Saturday am and have settled into our first stop off in the Brecon Beacons. The weather is glorious, the tent went up in minutes 🙌 I'm actually surprised how relaxed it's all been so far. The amenities on-site are fabulous and this particular site will be on my list for next year. Nice breeze this afternoon.. hot dogs and corn on the cob for tea. Followed by a game or two of rummy cub 😊

TheGirlWhoLived · 18/07/2022 12:08

Sounds idyllic!!

How’s the food situation going?
our go to is dollop pasta and frankfurter sausages when we arrive anywhere.😃
mare you going near Pembrokeshire?

BerthaBetty · 24/07/2022 14:40

Corned beef hash all from tins (potatoes, peas, carrots, corned beef) then oxo, water and an onion dried off of you can be bothered. Take a jar of beetroot.

biggirlpantson · 24/07/2022 19:00

Still going good.. we've been to the Brecon Beacons, Tenby, Newport bay way, Cardigan Island now in Snowdonia.. up until now we've had no rain! Arrived yesterday absolutely peeing down.. put up the tent and got soaked through to my knickers 🥴 cooked hot dogs and pasta and the boys were in bed by 10..! Went down to the communal kitchen / games room to do some laundry and end d up at a random party in the laundry room until 2am.. 😆 good wise I'm winging it pretty much. I've got a BBQ and double stove, burgers/chicken drumsticks and bbq corn seem popular.

Ooh I'm trying this!! Sounds fabulous

@kateandme will do a list, I've had some good ones. One not so great but I think that's because we've had some fabulous ones!

Oh yes.me too.south coast...wow.one of the best places on earth round there.

Mysterian · 25/07/2022 20:29

My tip is to not boil pans of pasta. Too much heat needed. Put the sauce in a pan with dry pasta and add water when needed until pasta is cooked.
