Camping toilet options?

Hi
Just back from 3 nights camping at the Lake District. We were a 1000 step round walk to the toilet block and I do need to wee during the night.

I'd brought some Toilet Johns with me, but firstly they're expensive and secondly I seem to need more than one per night.

I'm honestly not a troll I've been here for ages and wondered what people recommend. We don't have room for anything big - car was stuffed as it was.

Bucket? You can get ones with toilet seats if you're fancy. Then just empty/swill it out the next day.

rookiemere · 05/06/2022 14:00

@CornishGem1975 should have said looking for something smaller than a bucket and also something the dog can't kick over.

I'm not sure you'll get anything smaller to be honest?

Maybe you could ask for pitches nearer to the toilet blocks in future if you can't really fit anything in? Not always possible but lots of sites do let you pick in advance or make requests?

NatMoz · 05/06/2022 14:03

I just wee behind the tent in the night

Sqeebling · 05/06/2022 14:04

Bucket with a lid

I had to pee in my DS potty the first time I went camping

rookiemere · 05/06/2022 14:05

@NatMoz aren't you worried about people seeing you ?
My problem is I seem to need to go at least twice, it gets worse the more I think about it.
@CornishGem1975 we could have been closer to the toilet block but DH wanted more privacy and I thought I was ok with the Travel Johns.

A she wee and a plastic bottle with a cap.

rookiemere · 05/06/2022 14:08

@Discovereads I have got a she wee but I don't get on with it very well, maybe I need more practice with it.

Bucket lined with a bin liner, cheap disposable nappy in the bottom.

CuriousCatfish · 05/06/2022 14:12

You can buy collapsible buckets.

@CornishGem1975 should have said looking for something smaller than a bucket and also something the dog can't kick over.

Cat litter reduces some of the problems caused by knocking the toilet over.

A bucket of some sort, small bin bags to line the bucket and a bag of cat litter, add a sprinkle with each use and then dispose at a convenient time. These can be binned etc

There are various camping toilet bucket designs around …. Eg

For privacy a toilet tent / shower tent does the job well & reduces dog worries :

Ah great suggestions about the cat litter or nappy option. Would never have thought of that.

SlipperyLizard · 05/06/2022 14:23

We use a bucket with a bin liner & cat litter, we have one with a seat but it is only me that uses it.

CornishGem1975 · 05/06/2022 14:25

Yes we've done cat litter before - it really needs to be the wood pellet one.

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 05/06/2022 14:29

You can just tip this out on the grass somewhere where you're not likely to walk near.

rookiemere · 05/06/2022 14:34

@DoubleYouOhEmAyEn ah yes that looks good but no lid but links to others below with lids ( want to avoid having to go outside the tent at night otherwise I'll wake the dog)

OP posts:
Jinglejangl · 05/06/2022 14:45

A large yoghurt pot with lid - like the ones you get in lidl.

StageRage · 06/06/2022 17:13

The wide tubs that bird food comes in, with its lid.

A food waste caddy, the little bucket type.

Does the dog have to sleep in the same part of the tent as the receptacle?

rookiemere · 06/06/2022 19:50

@StageRage the dog will be in DHs compartment or in the middle bit. I'd like an arrangement I can keep in my compartment- would be slightly worried about falling asleep again and kicking over a bucket in small space unless it was secured shut.

OP posts:
rookiemere · 07/06/2022 10:44

@StageRage brilliant- and it has fat balls for the birds Grin.

OP posts:
rookiemere · 07/06/2022 10:45

And thinking about it I can add some cat litter or a nappy to line the bottom.

I use a fridge door jug with a clippy seal lid. It takes about two big wees. Does the job, doesn't take up much space.

Ohwhathaveidonenow · 07/06/2022 10:49

Use one of those big plastic peanut butter pots. They seal tightly with the lid and easy to swill out in the morning.

Blubellz · 07/06/2022 10:53

When I was pregnant (and camping), DH fashioned me something out of an Evian bottle. He cut off the top and inverted it back into the bottle. It was quite ingenious, rather discreet and I wish I hadn’t disposed of it!
