Camping toilet options?

Hi
Just back from 3 nights camping at the Lake District. We were a 1000 step round walk to the toilet block and I do need to wee during the night.

I'd brought some Toilet Johns with me, but firstly they're expensive and secondly I seem to need more than one per night.

I'm honestly not a troll I've been here for ages and wondered what people recommend. We don't have room for anything big - car was stuffed as it was.

@Ohwhathaveidonenow even better as we have one of those and I've realised Wilkos charges £5 for deliveries as we don't have one locally.

We bought a bivvy loo for our last camping trip. Quite expensive initially but the refills aren't too bad especially if you just buy the powder sachets and bags separately. I left it up overnight but only put the bag and sachet in when I needed to go and then tied up and removed the waste straight away so nothing to knock over or spill. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0797YCX15/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My friends have got a bucket with toilet seat, they put a bag and cat litter in the bottom, empty and wipe everyday. Store behind the tent in the day, sorted!

Doyoumind · 17/06/2022 21:53

amzn.eu/g0EMF8a You might already have found a solution as you posted a while ago, but this is small and does the job. I bought it for DC when we're camping but have successfully used it myself on occasion.

TorviShieldMaiden · 17/06/2022 22:00

I just wee behind the tent. When I’ve used a bucket I take it out and empty it in a bush behind the tent before going back to bed.

I wee a lot in the night and don’t mind the walk to the toilets either.

Rockhoppperd · 17/06/2022 22:25

Take a look at boginabag. I’ve used one of these - works well and doesn’t take up too much room

Dilbertian · 17/06/2022 22:25

The first thing I pack when getting ready to go camping is my Little Bucket. It's about the size of a beach bucket, and has a tight-fitting lid. The small size is perfect for popping under my bum while kneeling in the tent porch at 3am. And because it is small there is minimal noise while peeing. I empty it into the loo in the morning and wash it out. It earns its space in the car by being filled with a roll of toilet paper and a bag of clothes pegs.

TooManyPJs · 17/06/2022 23:03

At Glastonbury i (and many others!) use a
fabric conditioner bottle that has a tiny amount of fab con still in it. Then empty it in the morning. It's good for at least a few days. The wide neck works for weeing in but if you are worried you can use a funnel.

Handsnotwands · 17/06/2022 23:21

Please don’t put bags of piss soaked cat litter in campsite bins. It’s disgusting and unsanitary and we’ll probably all end up with typhoid or something.

rookiemere · 18/06/2022 07:07

Some new responses- excellent!

From the first batch of responses I have identified a large peanut butter bucket that will do the job, once empty of course. I'm thinking that lined with a nappy should do the trick. We aren't planning to go camping again for a while once a year is about my limit so any other suggestions welcome !

Dilbertian · 18/06/2022 10:41

I wouldn't line it with a nappy - too bulky. If you want an absorbent liner, use something smaller, like a Tena pad. You can even buy small absorbent pads, or loose polyacrylate gel. Personally I prefer to use something with less environmental impact, so I don't put anything absorbent in the bucket. Makes life easier because I can just flush the lot. OTOH I don't have a dog in the porch of my tent!

I'm looking at the options for a festival in 10 days. Dd recently diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease so don't want her to queue for toilets if she's having a bad day.

We already have a camping toilet that's a massive bucket with seat basically-not actually used it before though. I might get some of those she wee things that turn the wee to gel or use wooden cat litter in it. Hard to say what's best.

Have been looking at toilet tents too as will need to order one

stillsmilingtoday · 19/06/2022 10:16

if you get a toilet tent it might be worth getting one which has blackout - if you go to the loo in ours at night (just regular fabric) with a head torch on your outline can be seen and your daughter might feel self-conscious x

HippyChickMama · 19/06/2022 10:34

We use a bucket with toilet seat camping toilet with the green bio toilet fluid in, you only need a bit of the chemical and we empty it every few days in the chemical disposal. We have a toilet tent that we pitch with the door facing inwards towards the side door of the tent so it can only be accessed via the tent and at night you just unzip both doors and step through. We have a rule of wee only in the camping toilet unless it's an absolute emergency! The toilet tent is tiny when folded down so takes up very little room in the car, the toilet itself takes up more room but we transport it with toilet rolls, bottle of chemical and various other things in (lights, bin bags etc.) having disinfected it at home after each trip

If it's Glastonbury the site is so huge it could mean a long trek back to her tent to avoid a queue.

buckeejit · 19/06/2022 18:31

Thanks - will look at Blackout ones. No not Glastonbury-had hoped to take dc some
Day but she definitely couldn't cope with it atm. To be fair, I'm not fit enough for Glasto right now!

bobisbored · 19/06/2022 18:34

Bucket with a loo seat! Then bags inside bought from eBay. Bags are called disposajohn! They have gel granules in to soak up the wee.

I generally pee behind the tent if discreet enough otherwise I have purchased a female hospital type urinal if it’s raining and can’t get outside or if really bursting during the night.

Any camp I've been it's dark and discreet to just nip outside. Probably louder to use a bucket or device and would make my kids uncomfortable if they heard me or knew I was weeing inside the tent 😂

Nat6999 · 04/07/2022 01:56

Buy a chemical toilet, they do stand alone ones. We had a cassette chemical toilet in our caravan, we used it for both wee & poo & it was great. It may be a little smelly when you empty it depending which chemicals you use but I found out the trick was to put a biological washing tablet (not capsule) in with the chemicals & it stops the smell by dissolving all the proteins that cause smells

JuliePi · 04/07/2022 02:07

I find that using my urinal doesn’t make too much noise but generally just me and a female friend camping so we don’t care too much. But might be embarrassing if there were children about as you say…
The biggest issue with the urinal is it only holds maybe 600ml so if you have a full bladder you may need to watch for overflowing.

Might try it. If it's quiet and kids asleep they won't know. They would just be uncomfortable with it, despite them happily peeing on trees outside, there seems to be different rules for me

JuliePi · 04/07/2022 03:13

Yes there’s always a difference set of rules for us women when it comes to peeing outside…
I don’t seem to be worried however as I get older.

clanell · 04/07/2022 03:26

The rules are weird. People like us just crack on and no one is any the wiser, or people are outraged the mention of a wild wee. So many girls from 3/4 are taken home from the park, whereas lads are sent off to a discreet tree.

JuliePi · 04/07/2022 04:19

Yes I don’t understand the outrage as is just a wild wee after all.
I remember being with younger relatives years ago while camping and exactly what you said the boys were off to a tree or just in the open whereas the girls had to hold on until there was a loo handy or at least a very private area. So unfair.
