Camping toilet options?

Hi
Just back from 3 nights camping at the Lake District. We were a 1000 step round walk to the toilet block and I do need to wee during the night.

I'd brought some Toilet Johns with me, but firstly they're expensive and secondly I seem to need more than one per night.

I'm honestly not a troll I've been here for ages and wondered what people recommend. We don't have room for anything big - car was stuffed as it was.

But surely if everyone at a camp site started weeing behind the tent, the place would stink of urine ?

I just got a nappy and carefully weed in it then binned it. The liquid did need distributing carefully but it was a cheap effective silent option and it was the only thing I had to hand

I also wouldn’t recommend peeing behind a tent.
Its going to soak away into the ground - but it’s not going to head straight down

I use a collapsible bucket with a lid and empty it into the campsite loo in the morning. I also have some absorbant pads, I bought them on amazon, I think they were called commode pads - they are more effective and cheaper than nappies and cat litter, but I only use these rarely.

rookiemere · 04/07/2022 12:52

@NannyR brilliant! Just checked and they are called commode liners and appear to do roughly the same job as the Travel Johns I had bought ( with the addition of a receptacle) for about 100th of the price !

Even in one night if everyone had a wee outside, with the rain and dew and space it wouldn't matter, dogs wee outside constantly but we don't smell it

I don't understand what the step count as to do with distance to toilet. I was at least that far this weekend. I wee behind tent/van, but my dd won't so I walk her to the toilet.

I actually really enjoy the walk at the time of night, when everything is so still and quiet. You get to see the stars, or the sun coming up. What is the issue with walking to the toilet?

rookiemere · 07/07/2022 15:50

@TorviShieldMaiden the issue is I go to
The toilet 2-3 times in the middle of the night. No desire to do a 10 minute round trip in the middle of the night. Plus it would wake up the dog who'd assume I was gearing up to
Take him for a walk and bark when I didn't.

I pee that often too. Fair enough with the dog, I can see that would be an issue.

skimper · 12/07/2022 01:35

@TorviShieldMaiden your right the quiet walk is so peaceful seeing all the stars etc. apart from half the time it's pouring down, then it's crap 😂

I just wee behind the tent in the night

that's what I do. Although when it was cold in March, I used the washing up bowl. (sounds gross but it's only me and my dog)

rookiemere · 12/07/2022 08:53

I struggle to sleep as it is. 3 x 10 minute walks to the toilet blocks in the middle of the night wouldn't help with that.

So OP here just to update.

Just back from a trip and camped on the last 2 nights.

I used an empty bucket that had contained birds fat balls ( someone recommended this here) and lined it with some Tesco incontinence pads, which I bagged up and binned in the morning.

A better solution than before , but still a bit grim. For some reason when I'm in my bed I get up for a nocturnal wee once, maybe twice max at night, but when camping I seem to need to go every two hours Blush.

Glad to be back to our own bed and en suite. Maybe camping just isn't for me.

At home I only need to pee once in the night but it's more frequent when camping, and also varies with the temperature I found. I planned and bought a shewee and an expandable urine bottle. I haven't used them - like others, I either decide that I would enjoy the walk over to the facilities (as it's a starry night) or I pee behind the tent / car / in the woods behind (if it's drizzling or I can't wake up enough).

SweatyChamoisPad · 18/08/2022 19:54

Were you at Baysbrown campsite? Those lower fields are a long way from the loo block if so. We stay in the top ones as I need to go for a “long sit down” as my late dad called it, the second I wake up and there’s no way I could wait that long.

I take a 1l Nalgene bottle with a screw lid for when it’s raining at night and I need the loo. Just take it into the loos in the morning and pour down and flush.

rookiemere · 18/08/2022 19:57

@SweatyChamoisPad no the campsite with long walk was Hillcroft at Pooley Bridge. This time we were at Wood Nook in Yorkshire and toilets were a bit closer, but still a bit of a trek.
