I'm looking for a small site ideally north England somewhere, it has to be quiet and small, preferably for tents and campers but not static caravans (only because those tend to be on larger and busier sites), and have access to toilet and shower facilities. It doesn't have to be fancy or perfect, just clean and quiet. Ideally it would be walking distance or a short drive to nice walks, and to somewhere for eating out in the evening. Does this exist?!

Yes, they definitely exist!

The CoolCamping search site is good for specifying what you want, and they don't deal in holiday park type sites with statics etc.

Also search on PitchUp.Com . Use the filters in the Left hand columns - 'campfires allowed' often means small peaceful sites, and under Themes pick ones that sound likely. 'Wild camping' means 'wild style' - fairly basic, often eco facilities, no loud music allowed, that sort of thing.

I don't camp in the North (yet) so can't recommend anywhere specific but there are lots of sites like this in Southern and Eastern England, so I am sure the North has them too.

Also look here : www.greenercamping.org/

And here nearlywildcamping.org/ Though I am not sure I would pay £24 to join!

Try Catgill at Bolton abbey! Stunning.

We haven't been since DC were small but Mill Farm near to Skipsea might work for you. It's small and mostly tents/tourers. There were some seasonal pitches but not many and not statics.

Facilities aren't fancy but were very clean and well looked after. There's a pub down the road I think and lots of good walking and places to visit.

I don't know the north at all, sorry but pitchup.com you can put in all your criteria and it will tell you what's available. We never go to any sites with club houses as it's not for us, there are plenty out there

Gillside farm, Glenridding
Right on the river. Under Helvellyn. Small village with few lovely bars for food and close to Ullswater launch. Lots of walks from site

Thank you everyone, I've booked one but will keep the rest of the suggestions to try in the future.

The YMCA at borrowdale we camped there its a small green at the front of the building so only a few tents and you can use the kitchen facilities so we put our milk in the fridge and each morning just did the basic tea/coffee sugar in the mugs walked ten yards to the kitchen and used the water urn , there are two toilets /showers just for the campers mains ones , and they do a full brekkie in the dining room if you dont want to cook and basic but ok evening meals, lots of nice country pubs in the area and borrowdale valley is stunning for scenery its a car trip though , went up to a lead mine that was fun, theres a walk down to the lake as well would really recomend have a look at it ,
